Late Night Eats + Cocktails

Some of Asheville’s best food can be found after hours. If you’re after a full meal or just a light bite, you can find whatever you’re looking for as late as 2 AM. Whether you’re craving pizza, tacos, Southern comfort food, or a classic late-night burger and fries, there are several eateries to choose from.

  • The One Stop: Pair some great music with freshly baked pizzas or wings (with veggie/vegan options available).
  • The Golden Pineapple: The cocktail menu is elite, with 13 original handcrafted beverages. It will help you ease into the cozy atmosphere.
  • Universal Joint: A great place in West Asheville for a late-night burger and brew and midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Off The Beaten Draft

Asheville is known for its tremendous craft beer scene, but there are some great dive bars that can slip under the radar. Here’s some places to check out if you’re looking to try something a little more local.

Like to shoot pool or throw darts? Check out these other late-night spots: Charlotte Street Pub, The Social, Westville Pub, Frazier’s Tavern, The Bier Garden, Barley’s Taproom, or Olde London Road.

Want to mix it up with the locals? Try Tiger Mountain, Desoto Lounge, Fleetwood’s, Double Crown, or the Yacht Club. Go to the Burger Bar for a true dive bar experience, but don’t expect any burgers - it’s a drinks-only establishment.

Where Can I Karaoke?

Don’t listen to the haters. You’re a star. The world needs to hear your voice.

Exploring Asheville's Culinary Scene

Asheville has become a Foodtopia in recent years, and the rest of the country has noticed! The city's craft breweries have demanded as much attention as its independent restaurants, and visitors to the area are often excited to learn that such a small city has world-class dining options.

Downtown Asheville

Downtown Asheville is home to some of the city’s most popular restaurants. Curate and Rhubarb are perhaps the most well known (reservations are almost always required). Chai Pani, located on Battery Park Avenue, serves an eclectic menu of Indian Street Food items - we recommend the Green Mango Chaat! It’s positively sumptuous. For more a classic burger joint, you can't go wrong with Farm Burger - a farm to table restaurant that passionately supports our local farming community. Located in the heart of downtown, not far from Pack Square, it is the perfect lunch spot!

There are several breweries located in Downtown as well - Green Man, located on Buxton Ave in Downtown, is one of our favorites. Hi-Wire Brewing combines an interesting space with some delicious beverages.

West Asheville

West Asheville has a unique personality, and the restaurants and breweries located there reflect that color. More of a small town than a neighborhood, West Asheville is home to a great many of our favorite restaurants and breweries. For breakfast, we recommend Sunny Point Cafe. For lunch, you can’t go wrong with the Universal Joint. For dinner, The Admiral is a hidden gem - the chef has been nominated for the James Beard Award in recent years and his flavor combinations are eclectic and inspired!

River Arts District

The River Arts District is a really interesting part of town. Once the industrial district of Asheville, over the years it has become an Art Mecca in the mountains. The warehouses have been turned into studios, restaurants, breweries, and boutiques. The communities are supportive, colorful, and uniquely Ashevillean. It is the perfect example of how art can transform a cold, crumbling environment into a rich and vibrant community. We recommend spending a day exploring the studios and galleries before stopping for lunch at 12 Bones Smokehouse.

Historic Biltmore Village

Historic Biltmore Village is a charming area across from the entrance to the Biltmore Estate. With a wide array of shops and boutiques, Biltmore Village can be a great place to spend an afternoon. We recommend having lunch at The Cantina, a Certified Green Restaurant that sources a great deal of its ingredients from local Western North Carolina farms. The Corner Kitchen is another excellent option. Housed in a lovely turn of the century Victorian home in the heart of Historic Biltmore Village, The Corner Kitchen is a winning combination of beautiful ambiance, dedicated staff, and provocative menu.

The Universal Joint Experience

How does one tell the story of seemingly the most popular restaurant and patio in all of North Georgia? By talking about the food? The always-flowing beer? The patio that spans for days in the shadows of Black Rock and Screamer Mountain? The live music on warm summer nights from local artists? The Universal Joint, affectionately known as U-Joint or UJ, may sound familiar to you. You might have stumbled across (or into) their Decatur location. But the Clayton location . . . the one down the street from us . . . the one that we eat at once a week . . . the one we drink a beer at multiple times a week . . . it’s the best location. And it’s the best because every bite and every sip tastes better when you have the mountains as your view. It’s a proven fact.

Ode to the Steinbeck

First up, the Steinbeck. I thought about making this whole post just an Ode to the Steinbeck. I figured hammering out 2,000 words on the best burger I have ever eaten could serve as my life’s work. That one day my undivided love and worship of it could serve as a reminder to my children and my children’s children about what it means to follow your passions. The Steinbeck is simple and brilliant. Chargrilled burger. Spicy pimento cheese. Thick cut bacon. Pickled jalapeños. Toasted bun. It’s a gorgeous piece of art and every bit as good as it sounds. My mouth waters thinking about it and I want more when I’m done eating it. Photos don’t do the Steinbeck justice at all nor does this description. All their burgers and sandwiches are great. The Swiss Mushroom Burger is overflowing with sautéed mushrooms. The Brisket Dip is house smoked and comes with the best horseradish cream sauce on the planet. The Buffalo Chicken Sandwich is fiery goodness. If burgers aren’t your thing - and after that description who are we kidding, they should be - then the Quesadillas and Tacos are a good substitute. And don’t be shy about their Spicy Egg Rolls or BBQ Pork Nachos.

Beer Selection

Where UJ separates itself is its beer selection. It’s not that they have good beers but it’s that they have somehow managed to have great ones always flowing without the place devolving into a chaotic and rowdy bar. That makes UJ both family-friendly and comfortable enough for those who want to have more than one drink.

They usually have 15 or so beers on tap covering all kinds of preferences. Instead of having 15 IPAs on all the taps they spread it out with light beers, hoppy beers, seasonal specialties, and small runs from local breweries who are testing things out. You can expect to find most of the Atlanta area breweries and then those from Western North Carolina and into Asheville like Wicked Weed and Highland Brewing Company.

The Patio

The patio is massive and this is where the majority of the action is. They have corn hole boards outside to play if you have to wait for a table. The fire pit stays going year-round, particularly in the evening, and you can pretty much find live music on most weekends in spring through fall. It’s a fairly kid-friendly place so don’t be surprised (or upset) if you see kids zipping around outside. Inside they have a few televisions for sports and a dozen or so tables if you’d rather eat under a roof. In the winter, you pretty much have to eat inside as the patio isn’t quite as nice on cold and blustery days.
