CEO of Comcast Brian L. Roberts predicted that they would take market share away from Walt Disney Parks and Resorts chains with their plans to invest in their Universal Studios theme parks. In October 2014, Universal Parks & Resorts officially signed the deal to build Universal Studios Beijing, with the opening then scheduled for 2019.

The project represents a substantial investment of over 20 billion RMB (US$3.3 billion) and is a collaborative effort between Beijing Shouhuan Cultural Tourism Investment Co., Ltd. (BSH Investment), a consortium of state-owned companies, and Universal Parks & Resorts.
