Universal Studios: Your Guide to Conquering the Park in a Single Day
Los Angeles is home to many great theme parks. But if you only have one day and want to experience the magic of movies, Universal Studios Hollywood might be the perfect choice for you. This guide will help you navigate the park, maximize your time, and ensure a memorable experience.
Planning Your Day at Universal Studios
Before diving into the park, a little preparation can go a long way.
Prioritize Your Must-Do's
With limited time, identifying your top priorities is crucial. Spend some time studying the theme park maps, reading about each ride or experience and deciding which rides, shows and attractions are your must-dos so you don’t miss them. Are you a die-hard Harry Potter fan? Do you crave thrilling rollercoasters? Make a list of your top 5 must-do rides or experiences and build your day around them to ensure you hit those highlights.
Choosing the Right Time to Visit
Visiting during the off-season can significantly impact your experience. Consider visiting on a weekday during the school year to avoid large crowds. My November 1, 2021, visit came the day after Universal’s popular Halloween Horror Nights event ended and before the Christmas celebration started. It was a Monday during the school year. Crowds were very small. Even the most popular rides had standard wait times of 60 minutes or less. However, if you're visiting during peak season, strategic planning becomes even more critical.
Download the Universal Studios Hollywood App
The official Universal Studios Hollywood app is an indispensable tool. It provides real-time updates on:

- Ride wait times
- Show schedules
- Mobile food ordering (a huge time-saver!)
- Character meet-and-greet locations
- Interactive maps to help navigate the park
As a directionally challenged person, I found the interactive map to be the most important feature of the app.
Getting to Universal Studios
Transportation Options
- Public Transportation: Take the Expo line from the “Expo Park/USC Station” to the “7th St/Metro Center.” Then, transfer to the Red Line and ride it to the ‘Universal City/Studio City’ stop. From there, the park is only 12 minutes away.
- Ride-Sharing Services: Taking an Uber would cut the time in half, but would probably increase the price from $5 to $30 (not including parking).
- Driving: Driving would take roughly an hour depending on the time of day.
Arrive Early
The park officially opens at different times depending on the season, but crowds start forming well before the gates open. We aim to arrive 45 minutes before opening, this gives you a head start on the busiest attractions as well as the queue.
Maximizing Your Time in the Park
Consider an Express Pass
An Express Pass grants you access to shorter lines, allowing you to experience more attractions in a single day. Express tickets can be a huge expense for families, but we feel the benefits are well worth it, especially if you are taking that once-in-a-lifetime trip or like us only spending one day in the park.
- Universal Express: Includes one-time express access to each ride, attraction, and seated show. Cost between $179-$259. Includes general admission to the park. Can save up to $10 if bought online, rather than bought at the gate.
- Single Rider Lines: If you don’t mind splitting up for a ride, Single Rider lines can significantly cut down wait times. People in that line get placed on rides with strangers to fill a row.
Strategic Ride Order
With early entry to the park, prioritizing popular attractions is key. I would recommend prioritising the most popular rides in the Lower Lot (Jurassic World, The Mummy, Transformers) and Super Nintendo World, then tackle the Upper Lot attractions like the Studio Tour and Harry Potter rides, all while maximising your time with early access.
- Lower Lot: Jurassic World, Revenge of the Mummy, Transformers: The Ride-3D
- Upper Lot: Studio Tour, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter
Super Nintendo World
Super Nintendo World fills up fast! Arriving early is essential to minimize wait times.

The Studio Tour
You have access to a Studio Tour before 11am which I would highly recommend as the wait times are always high, it’s a must see in this park, one of a kind and the original theming for the park. This is what I love about the Hollywood park, its original theming.
Dining Strategies
Eat Early or Late
Theme park food lines can be a nightmare, so a little planning goes a long way. I would recommend eating early or late - try to avoid peak lunch hours (12-2 PM) by eating around 11 AM or after 2:30 PM. This generally works for us as we enter the park so early.
Mobile Ordering
Utilising mobile order is a must. Mobile ordering through the app helps too.
What to Bring
Minimal Bags
Some rides require you to use lockers (like Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and Revenge of the Mummy), so carrying minimal bags will save you time and stress. The lockers vary in size and cost so do research before you arrive.
Attractions
Universal Studios houses 6 traditional rides. Being focused on movies, it has tons of character sightings. This park also has 9 interactive attractions/shows. These are not traditional rides and include things like 3D experiences and light shows. The park also has a section dedicated to kid rides and carnival games. Universal Studios houses the popular, Wizarding World of Harry Potter so if you are a Harry Potter fan, this is perfect for you! City Walk, which is next to Universal Studios and free to enter, also houses iFLY, a movie theatre, and a performance stage.

Accommodation
While there are lots of hotel options near Universal Studios Florida, staying at an official Universal hotel can give you a big boost when you have only one day to spend in the parks.
Accept That You Can’t Do It All
Visiting Universal Studios Hollywood in just one day can feel like a challenge, but with the right strategy, you can experience all the top attractions without feeling overwhelmed. We had a great day. Its such a good park.
