Unleash Your Potential: A Comprehensive Guide to the UNF Student Wellness Complex

The University of North Florida (UNF) is committed to the holistic well-being of its students, faculty, and staff. At the heart of this commitment lies the Student Wellness Complex, a multifaceted facility designed to promote fitness, wellness, and adventure. More than just a gym, it's a hub for comprehensive health resources and activities. Let's explore the diverse offerings of this dynamic complex.

Your Gateway to Wellness: The First Floor

Upon entering the Student Wellness Complex, the first floor welcomes you with a vibrant and informative atmosphere.

Member Services

The Member Services desk, located in the lobby, serves as your central point of contact. Here, you can obtain membership information, class schedules, and browse merchandise. The friendly staff can answer your questions and guide you toward the resources you need.

Fuel Up at Jamba Juice

For a healthy snack or meal, a Jamba Juice outlet is conveniently located in the lobby. Replenish your energy after a workout or grab a nutritious treat between classes.

The Osprey Cliff: A Climbing Adventure

A standout feature of the first floor is the impressive climbing wall, known as the Osprey Cliff. Rising 34 feet to meet the track level, it offers challenging routes and stunning views of the activity on all floors. Whether you're a seasoned climber or a beginner, the Osprey Cliff provides a fun and engaging way to test your physical and mental limits.

Relaxation Zone: Massage Chairs

Need to unwind after a challenging workout or a stressful day? Two vending machine massage chairs are available on the first floor. These chairs offer various massage techniques, including shiatsu, kneading, and synchronized motions, for a comprehensive massage experience.

Group Fitness Studios

The majority of group fitness classes are held in the three dedicated indoor group fitness rooms. These spaces are designed to accommodate multiple classes simultaneously, offering a wide variety of options to suit your interests and fitness level. From yoga and Zumba to cycling and strength training, there's a class for everyone.

Elevate Your Fitness: The Second Floor

The second floor of the Student Wellness Complex is dedicated to providing a comprehensive fitness experience.

The Dottie Dorion Fitness Center

The Dottie Dorion Fitness Center is the centerpiece of the second floor. This expansive space boasts 27,000 square feet of fitness floor space and accommodates over 260 exercise stations. Whether you prefer cardio machines, free weights, or strength training circuits, you'll find everything you need to achieve your fitness goals.

Outdoor Multi-Use Balcony

Located just off of the expansive Cardio area is the outdoor multi-use balcony which is also used as an outdoor group fitness space.

Dr. Paul Shirley Assessment Center

Also on the second floor is the Dr. Paul Shirley Assessment Center where students can get immediate access to fitness and nutritional assessments. When you come into the Wellness Complex and you want to be physically active, you may not know what to do or where you are physically, so you could easily go to the Assessment Center and get a full fitness assessment that tests the five components of fitness. We would then link you to a fitness trainer that can walk you through the dynamics of the fitness center floor.

RecWell: Your Destination for Fitness, Wellness, and Adventure

The Department of Recreation and Wellness, known as RecWell, oversees a vast array of programs and facilities spanning approximately 230 acres of the UNF campus. RecWell is divided into several units, each dedicated to a specific aspect of wellness:

Staying Safe and Informed

In addition to providing all of these services and experiences, the Student Wellness Complex strives to make sure every student is safe while using the facility. When we developed this gym, Jim Baur [Associate Director of the Student Wellness Complex] looked at other universities across the state of Florida. He talked to faculty, staff and students to see what was right and what was wrong.

CPR/First-Aid Certification

RecWell offers American Red Cross Adult First-Aid and CPR/AED training to currently enrolled UNF Students and UNF Faculty and Staff. This certificate is valid for 2 years from the date of completion. Courses will be held in The Student Wellness Complex. Participants are to check-in at the Member Services desk upon arrival for directions to the training room. No refund will be issued for any CPR/First-Aid registrations unless the class is canceled by RecWell. If you are unable to attend a class, you can switch to a later class date (one-time only). To complete the online learning, you'll be prompted to login. First time users need to create a login for Red Cross. After completing the online learning portion, the last screen shows your completion certificate. Screenshot this on your phone to show your instructor.

Peer Health Education

Our Peer Health Educators provide free presentations to UNF classes. Topics include Alcohol, Tobacco and Drugs, Stress Management, Sleep, Resiliency, Nutrition, and Fitness.

Free HIV Testing

We provide free, anonymous HIV testing to students as well as anyone else in the community. Appointments are required.

Understanding Your Membership

Well, the answer boils down to a few simple facts. As a UNF student, your gym membership is included in your tuition, whether you use the gym or not. Might as well get your money’s worth, right? In addition, staying fit and active is an easy way to keep yourself healthy and de-stress after a long day of classes and the gym offers many ways to achieve this, whether you prefer group fitness yoga classes or solo weightlifting.

Reinvent Yourself: Embrace Holistic Wellness

College is a time to reinvent yourself, and many people see physical fitness as an integral part of reinvention. The most important thing you should know about our gym, according to Ballard, is that it isn’t just a gym. “It’s a complex because it’s full of other important components that look at students holistically” Ballard said. A service you might want to look out for is the Assessment Center, which is located upstairs inside the Dottie Dorion Fitness Center. The Fitness Center also offers a free fitness orientation of your choice, from novice to interval to free weight workouts. In addition, the Osprey Cliff, a 34 foot rock wall designed to challenge you physically and mentally, is available if you are just looking for something fun to do. Group fitness classes are offered downstairs for those who would prefer to be walked through a workout or prefer to workout among friends. In-house dietitians are also available to assist you with nutritional concerns.
