Navigating UNCG Tuition: A Comprehensive Guide to Payment Options

Paying for college can be a daunting task. UNC Greensboro (UNCG) offers a variety of tuition payment options to help students manage their financial obligations and avoid penalties. It’s important for students to pay their bills to the university on time so they can avoid penalties like holds and being cancelled from their classes. Understanding these options is crucial for students and their families to ensure a smooth academic journey. This article provides a detailed overview of the various payment methods, financial aid opportunities, and other resources available to UNCG students.

Understanding Your UNCG Bill

UNC Greensboro issues bills for tuition, fees, housing, meal plans, and parking each semester via the student’s UNCGenie account. UNC Greensboro student tuition and fees are billed each semester and based on a number of factors including level, program campus type, residency, credit hours, and academic program. During the semester, students may incur new charges from adding or dropping courses, financial aid adjustments, and other charges (like student health insurance, parking, or library fines). It is the student’s responsibility to monitor their student account and pay for any charges in a timely manner. Payments must be submitted by the scheduled payment deadline date to avoid cancellation of classes. Financial aid that has been awarded and accepted is automatically applied to student bills, but it may not be enough to cover the full balance. Students should check their student account to make sure there is enough financial aid or payments to cover their balance by the deadline. Bills are issued electronically through the Student Account Center in UNCGenie. Log in to the Student Account Center at: go.uncg.edu/studentaccountcenter. Since billing statements are a snapshot in time, as students make changes to registration, housing, meal plans, parking, etc. This statement provides student charges, payments, balances, and courses for a selected term in real time. It can be used when an official transcript is not required, but the student must submit an itemized statement of billing or coursework to an employer or sponsor.

Specialized Payment Plans

There are several ways students can help defray their expenses. Students who take advantage of the options listed below will also receive the benefit of a deferment on their payment.

  • Military-Affiliated Students: Military-affiliated students may also be eligible for a military deferment payment plan to cover charges not covered by their sponsor.
  • Graduate Assistantship Deferral: Eligible graduate students who are hired on assistantships may qualify for a graduate assistantship deferral payment plan. This plan allows for up to four equal monthly payments per semester and permits students to receive their monthly paychecks prior to paying their installments. There is no additional fee charged for this plan. Remaining installments due towards the payment plan will automatically adjust if there is a change in the overall semester balance. Once the payment plan is set up by the Cashiers Office, the student may view the details of the plan online in the Student Account Center. The payment plan amount is based on the student’s total semester balance.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Many UNCG students receive financial aid each year in the form of grants, scholarships, and student loans. Students should apply for aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Outside scholarships must be reported to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. Financial aid is automatically applied to the student bill each semester toward charges for tuition/fees, housing, and meal plans. Note: Federal aid does not automatically cover additional costs beyond tuition, room, and board. Students can complete a Title IV (Financial Aid) Authorization form on UNCGenie if they want to allow their aid to be applied to other charges like parking permits, bookstore bucks, student health insurance, and other fines/charges. Aid may also be given to pay for up to $200 in prior term charges with authorization. In some cases, students may find that their financial aid package is greater than their total charges. In this case, the student can expect to receive a refund that they can use to pay for other expenses during the semester. More information about refunds can be found in the Refunds section.

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

When it comes to paying bills and applying for financial aid, deadlines are very important. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available starting October 1 each year. If you miss this window, please still plan to file your FAFSA as soon as possible. Students must file a FAFSA every year to continue their aid eligibility.

Third-Party Payments

Payments may be made on a student’s behalf by certain third parties that have arranged to pay all or a portion of a student’s bill. These payments may come from state and federal agencies, international embassies, military agencies, pre-paid college programs, employers or other organizations that have been granted special billing arrangements by the University. Students sponsored by a third party may be able to defer payment of a balance covered by the third party. Questions about third party billing? Step 1: Provide valid authorization to the Cashiers Office in the form of a statement on the sponsor’s letterhead. Is the award for multiple years?

Mail authorization to:

UNCG Cashiers and Student Accounts Office, Third Party BillingP.O. Box 26170Greensboro, NC 27402

529 Plans

A 529 plan is a college savings plan sponsored by a state or state agency. The 529 provider will provide instructions for processing a payment to UNCG. Different 529 plans have different forms and documents they require. The plan usually requires a copy of the student bill or student account activity.

Mail documents to:

UNCG Cashiers and Student Accounts OfficeP.O. Box 26170Greensboro, NC 27402

UNCG recommends that students contact their 529 provider well in advance of the payment due date to ensure payment is received by the deadline.

Tuition Waiver Program

UNCG’s tuition waiver program allows eligible employees to have tuition and fees waived for a course taken at any of the 17 campuses of the UNC System. Participation in the program is voluntary, and courses may be taken for either career development or personal interest. The employee must maintain eligible employed status during the duration of the course. Otherwise, the employee shall be responsible for payment of applicable tuition and fees. Employees are allowed to take up to three courses each year at the undergraduate or graduate level. Courses must be for credit. Tuition waivers can be applied to most courses offered at UNC institutions. Employees are expected to maintain acceptable job performance throughout their course enrollment. An application for tuition waiver form must be completed for each term a course is taken. The employee is responsible for any and all additional tuition and fees charged to their student account during the term; this includes UNCG First Day Complete course material charges.

Application Process for Tuition Waiver

  1. Apply to and be admitted for the desired program and university campus.
  2. Complete the Application for Faculty and Staff Tuition Waiver form, including advance signature approval of the supervisor and department head. EHRA faculty must also get a final approval signature from the Office of the Provost prior to submitting their completed form to the Cashiers and Student Accounts Office.
  3. Upload the completed form to the Cashiers and Student Accounts Office on or before 5:00pm on the terms’s specified payment deadline. After verifying the form, the waiver will be applied to the student account. Please allow up to one week for this to take place.

Law Enforcement Officers

Law enforcement officers will follow the same steps towards completing the tuition waiver process as reflected above. The following lists the differences in eligibility:

  • Law enforcement officers at constituent institutions or affiliated entities with a probationary, time-limited, or permanent appointment employed 20 or more hours per week on a continuing basis, regardless of eligibility for participation in either the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System or the UNC Optional Retirement Program.

Consequences of Late Payments

Students who do not pay by the posted deadline may be cancelled from their classes. The fastest way to remove past due holds is to make a payment online using certified funds (like credit card) on the Student Account Center. Holds are generally removed within 24 hours of paying the balance in full if paid by these methods. Students must pay their balance or make arrangements for a payment plan before the published deadline each semester. Failure to pay a bill will result in cancellation of registration. Students who have past due balances on their account are subject to a late payment penalty and will also be charged interest. Not receiving a bill or notice will not be accepted as a valid reason for not paying an account.

Setoff Debt Collection Act (SODCA)

As part of the North Carolina Setoff Debt Collection Act, debtors to the University with debts of $50 or greater must be listed with the N.C. Department of Revenue for potential set off against their NC individual income tax refunds. The NC Department of Revenue will notify the person with a past due account that the university has a claim against their income tax refund at the time that a refund is seized. The amount owed to UNCG plus a SODCA collection fee is deducted from the individual’s state tax refund. The amount owed is then forwarded to UNCG and the collection fee is retained by the NC Department of Revenue. UNCG will apply the funds received as payment against the outstanding account balance. The act gives the alleged debtor the right to a hearing to contest the validity of the debt. The alleged debtor has 30 days from the date of notification of the University’s claim to file a written request for a validity hearing. If you intend to dispute the amount you currently owe UNCG, you should do so by giving written notice within 30 days of the date of this notice to the UNCG Cashiers and Student Accounts Office, PO Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402.

Uncollectible Accounts

Accounts deemed uncollectible after a period of attempt to collect are written off the university’s accounts receivable balance. However, the unpaid balance plus interest and late fees remains a legal obligation of the student. These accounts will continue to be retained with a third-party collection agency.

Tuition and Fees: An Overview

UNC Greensboro aims to provide an outstanding education at a reasonable cost. Full-time, in-state undergraduate students living on campus can expect to pay at least $1,000 less than the average cost of attendance at other North Carolina public universities. Out-of-state and graduate tuition costs are also well below national averages. The Cost of Attendance is an estimated budget of what a student may spend over the course of the academic year. This estimate is based on local cost of living calculations and surveys of the student body. Tuition rates are reviewed by the UNCG’s Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors of the University of North Carolina System and set annually by the North Carolina legislature.

Residency and Tuition

Students must apply for official residency determination through www.NCresidency.org in order to receive in-state tuition and State financial aid consideration. Those who aren’t eligible for classification as a North Carolina “resident for tuition purposes” will be charged out-of-state tuition and not be given consideration for State financial aid. Students can get more information about residency and complete a determination at www.NCresidency.org.

Online Programs and Tuition

Online programs offer students an additional value when students receive instruction outside the state of North Carolina. Have an official non-resident Residency Determination Service designation prior to the schedule adjustment period for a given term. Are admitted to and enrolled in online course(s) in an approved online program. Reside outside of the state of North Carolina. Following an official Residency Determination Service (RDS) designation, an attribute (ONNC) is added to the student’s record automatically within 48-72 hours of UNCG receiving the determination. This attribute will result in tuition being assessed at the Outside NC tuition rate.

Use of Tuition and Fees

Tuition is used to support a variety of functions at UNCG, including classroom instruction, student services, maintenance of facilities and infrastructure, need-based aid, and institutional support. Tuition is also supplemented by appropriations from the North Carolina General Assembly. Required student fees support programs, services, and facilities on campus and online for which state funds are not available and/or cannot be used. Students enrolled in main campus programs can expect these required fees. Depending on student type and major, additional fees may apply. The fee covers 85% of the athletics budget. Pays for debt incurred on capital projects which cannot be built using state funds. For example: UNCG’s soccer and baseball stadiums, the Leonard J. Kaplan Center for Wellness, the Elliott University Center renovation, and the Anna M. Supports the Spartan Chariot campus transportation shuttle system (Weekday Loop, Spartan Village Express, and the Evening Safety Shuttle) which operates during the fall and spring semesters. Supports health, counseling, and wellness services at the Anna M. Gove Student Health Center. Online students pay a different set of mandatory fees charged per credit hour.

Fixed Tuition Program

UNCG participates in the Fixed Tuition Program, where all UNC System institutions fix tuition for up to eight consecutive semesters (excluding summer sessions) for North Carolina residents who meet certain requirements.
