Navigating the UCSB Student Portal: A Comprehensive Guide
The UCSB Student Portal serves as a central hub for students, providing access to essential resources, academic information, and important updates. This guide aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how to navigate the portal effectively, ensuring a smooth and successful academic journey at UC Santa Barbara.
Orientation Programs: Your First Step
Attending orientation is strongly encouraged for all new students. These programs offer an invaluable head start in preparing for college life.
First-Year Student Orientation
While not mandatory, the two-day orientation sessions for first-year students provide extensive academic advising and introduce crucial campus resources for both students and their families. A key benefit is the opportunity to register for classes during the session. Due to limited space, early registration is recommended.
Transfer Student Orientation
Transfer Orientation is a comprehensive, two-part program. It consists of an initial online module followed by an in-person session on the UCSB campus. Completing both components is highly recommended to facilitate a smooth transition to UCSB. The online transfer module, available from June 1st, provides vital academic and campus resource information. Attending a one-day transfer orientation session offers the chance to meet academic and campus resources in person. Completion of the online module grants priority registration.
International Student Orientation
International students participate in two orientations: one with UCSB Orientation Programs and Parent Services, and another with the Office of International Students & Scholars (OISS). The UCSB orientation covers all aspects of student life, services, and academic expectations. The OISS orientation, known as CALI Training (Cultural Awareness, Laws, and Immigration Training), focuses on essential immigration information. CALI Training is conducted online, supplemented by a webinar with OISS staff in late August/early September. International transfer students should complete the transfer module and are strongly encouraged to attend a transfer orientation session.

Key Resources Within the Portal
The UCSB Student Portal provides access to a wide range of essential resources.
Academic Resources
- Course Registration: As part of orientation, first-year students will register for classes during their session. Transfer students completing the online module are granted priority registration.
- Academic Information: The online transfer module, and orientation programs provide vital academic information.
International Student Resources
- I-20/DS-2019 Status: International students can monitor the status of their I-20/DS-2019 request through UCSBGlobal. It's recommended to wait two weeks before inquiring about documents, ensuring all required information has been submitted correctly.
- OISS Support: OISS advisors are available to assist with any issues or clarifications regarding required documents. OISS understands the challenges students face with US Embassies/Consulates but prioritizes processing requests in a timely manner.
Application Information
The UCSB Applicant Portal is used for managing applications.
Application Submission
Due to the high volume of submissions, first-year applications cannot be updated once submitted. Changes can be addressed after admission and enrollment.
Application Status
Applicants can only cancel or withdraw their application in the UCSB Applicant Portal. This is a final decision and cannot be reversed. Future enrollment requires reapplication during the appropriate filing period.
Transcripts
Transcripts should only be sent if admitted and after deciding to attend UCSB. UCSB accepts electronic transcripts from Credentials Solutions/eSCRIP-SAFE, SCOIR, eTranscript CA, Kiteworks, JST DoD Military Transcripts, Parchment Exchange, National Student Clearinghouse, and SPEEDE.

Demonstrated Interest
UCSB does not consider "demonstrated interest" in the admission decision-making process.
Financial Aid
Common questions about financial aid are answered on the Financial Aid FAQ. Applicants are encouraged to file by March 2nd.
Admissions Considerations
UCSB considers each application holistically, evaluating achievements in light of available opportunities and the applicant's capacity to contribute to the intellectual life at UCSB. Change or major requests cannot be accepted at the time of application. The University of California application asks applicants to self-report their academic information and to use a copy of their transcript when doing so. If admitted and you decide to attend the university, we will require your final transcripts with graduation posted.
