UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management: A World-Class Education in the Heart of Hospitality
The UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management stands as a leading institution in hospitality education, renowned for its innovative programs, experienced faculty, and prime location in the heart of Orlando, the most visited destination in the United States. With a focus on hands-on learning, global awareness, and industry connections, Rosen College prepares future leaders to shape the ever-evolving world of hospitality.
A History of Growth and Innovation
UCF's commitment to hospitality education began in 1983 with the establishment of its first program in Hospitality Management. This program emerged from UCF's Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies, which had been in operation since 1979. Dr. Abraham Pizam played a pivotal role in the department's early years, serving as its leader from its founding until 1993. Dr. Robert Ford then took the helm as department chair from 1993 to 1998. Dr. Pizam returned in 1998 and served until 2018. Dr. Youcheng Wang was selected as the new Dean in 2018 and served until stepping down in October of 2023.
A turning point for the program came in 2000 when Harris Rosen, owner of Orlando-based Rosen Hotels & Resorts and a long-time supporter of the university, made a transformative donation. Rosen contributed $10 million in cash and 25 acres of land (valued at $8 million), along with an additional $1.1 million in cash for scholarships. This significant gift spurred further investment in the program, including an $18 million matching gift from the State of Florida and $5 million from the Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau. As a result, the program was re-established as an independent school, named the Rosen School of Hospitality Management in honor of its major benefactor.
Whether intentional or not, the Sentinel article served as a catalyst for improvements. A $250,000 donation led to new and unique study tracks in Vacation Ownership Resort Management and Theme Park & Attraction Management.
