Every major at UCF requires at least one college-level math course; therefore, all students must take the Math Placement Test (MPT). The UCF Math Placement Test (MPT) is administered to determine placement into the mathematics course sequence. The University believes that the appropriate placement of students into certain course sequences is important to help foster an environment of success. Understanding the UCF Math Placement Test

The University of Central Florida (UCF) uses its own math placement test. The MPT is designed to assess your current math skills and determine the most appropriate math course for you to begin with. Incoming freshmen are strongly recommended to complete the MPT prior to attending Orientation; however, the due date to complete the MPT is the Friday before the start of your first semester at UCF. Students who have their MPT results available at Orientation will be able to receive assistance from their academic advisor to select the most appropriate math course.

Who Needs to Take the MPT?

Most students at University of Central Florida will need to take the math placement test. However, if you think you might have a high enough score on the SAT or ACT to be exempt from taking the placement test, check online or contact your testing center.

Content of the UCF Math Placement Test

The math on the University of Central Florida placement test covers Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry. The MPT assesses your knowledge in these key areas:

Pre-Algebra: Basic arithmetic operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, proportions, and basic problem-solving.
Algebra: Linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations, exponents, polynomials, factoring, quadratic equations, and functions.
Geometry: Basic geometric shapes, area, volume, Pythagorean theorem, and coordinate geometry.

Practice Tests

There are three (3) practice tests: algebra, trigonometry, and precalculus. Students have an unlimited number of attempts for the practice tests. All students must take and earn a 35% or higher on the practice algebra test in order to be eligible to proceed with taking the actual algebra test. Students have unlimited attempts with the practice algebra test. Test Format and Policies

Students will be allowed 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete the 25 algebra questions. If your algebra score is at least 350 of the possible 500 points you will be offered the opportunity to answer 15 trigonometry questions and 15 precalculus questions. You will have 1 hour 15 minutes for each of the trigonometry and precalculus sections.

Test-Taking Environment

The MPT should be completed from home, in one sitting on any computer with a secure and strong internet connection.

Allowed Materials

Students can have scrap paper, pencil, and a basic scientific calculator (not a graphing calculator). The calculator used in most of the math courses at UCF is the TI-30XA calculator which retails for under $15.00.

Academic Integrity

Any attempt to use any unapproved aids on the actual placement test (graphing calculator, math-solving applications) is considered academic misconduct and will be reported. As a student at UCF, you are expected to uphold the UCF Creed and demonstrate the highest standard of academic and personal integrity. Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, cheating, dishonest conduct, obtaining an unfair advantage and collusion.

Retaking the MPT

Math Placement Test (MPT) retakes must be requested and approved. Students approved for a retake attempt may retake the test one time, in-person, by appointment. Proctored retake appointments are taken at the University Testing Center on the main UCF campus in Orlando. The retake cost is $35.00. Additional retesting beyond the second attempt will not be provided under any circumstances.

Once a test has been submitted, students who meet certain criteria will have the option to retake the MPT during a proctored, in-person test session. The office of Student Accessibility Services (SAS) works in collaboration with the University Testing Center (UTC) to ensure that reasonable accommodations are made for students with documented disabilities.

Technical Assistance

Students who call the University Testing Center for assistance with the MPT can request to join a virtual help desk session. *This on-demand service is available during business hours when MPT staff are available.

Chemistry Placement Test

To register for CHM 2045C, you must earn a passing score in the Chemistry Placement Test webcourse. Students interested in majors that require CHM 2045 are recommended to take this test. To register for the Chemistry Placement Exam, visit your UCF Student Home Page at my.ucf.edu. There you will find a link to register for Placement Exams, including the Chemistry Placement Test, via Webcourses. Once you register for the Chemistry Placement Test, it will appear in your Dashboard in webcourses.ucf.edu. This course contains the exam as the only assignment. You will need to enroll in MFA via one of the options that pop-up when you first sign in to webcourses. Most students will need to use either the Duo mobile app or Microsoft Authenticator app.
