UCF Libraries offer a diverse range of study environments and resources to support students, faculty, and staff. From silent study spaces to group collaboration rooms and event venues, the library system caters to various academic needs. This article provides a detailed overview of the available spaces, their capacities, and the policies governing their use.

John C. Hitt Library: A Hub of Academic Resources

The John C. Hitt Library, the main branch of UCF Libraries, houses a variety of spaces designed to facilitate different learning styles and activities. Recent renovations have further enhanced the library's offerings, providing modern and functional environments for study and collaboration.

Multipurpose Event Space

Located on the 4th floor of the John C. Hitt Library, overlooking the Student Union entrance, is a multipurpose event space. This spectacular room can accommodate up to 110 guests, depending on the room setup. It also includes space for catering, making it suitable for various events. However, this space is exclusively bookable by Libraries Employees.

Silent Study Space

For students seeking a quiet and focused environment, the Silent Study Space on the 4th floor of the John C. Hitt Library is an ideal option. This space offers 131 seats and is designed to promote uninterrupted concentration. To maintain the silence, students are required to silence their cell phones, and talking is strictly prohibited.

360 Study Commons Suite

As part of the 21st Century Library renovations, the 3rd floor of the John C. Hitt Library now features the 360 Study Commons suite, which includes two conference rooms. Additionally, a new seminar room, featuring a cypress wall and star-embossed glass walls, provides an impressive space for meetings and discussions.

Instruction Rooms

The John C. Hitt Library also provides dedicated instruction rooms for classes and workshops. These include the 175 Barry Baker Room, a traditional computer classroom seating 40, and the 170 Dr. Joel Hartman Room, an active learning room seating 36.

Art Wall and Glass Display Cases

The main floor of the John C. Hitt Library features an Art Wall and Glass Display cases that can be booked by UCF and community groups for month-long displays. Previous displays have included "She Persisted - Women’s History Month at UCF (2018)," "Africana Studies (2018)," "Pulse 5th Anniversary Memorial (2021)," and "Lunar New Year (2023)."

Quiet Booths

Strategically placed throughout the John C. Hitt Library are Quiet Booths, which offer an opportunity for uninterrupted focus and concentration. Each booth has USB-A and USB-C ports, perfect for charging a personal device.

The 5th Floor

The 5th Floor, which occupies the half of the building by the Legacy entrance, is where silence blends with concentration and calm to create the perfect study space. Rustling pages, soft key typing, and soft pen strokes make up the soundtrack. The 5th floor houses several ergonomic seating and focus options designed for extended study sessions.

Other UCF Library Locations and Resources

In addition to the John C. Hitt Library, UCF Libraries offer study spaces and resources at multiple campus locations.

Downtown Campus Library

The Downtown Campus Library provides reservable group study rooms and meeting rooms. Current students, faculty, and staff can reserve group study rooms for same-day scheduling using a touch panel outside of each room. Meeting rooms may also be reserved by current students, faculty, and staff by sending a calendar appointment through Microsoft Outlook. There are four glass study rooms on the 2nd floor, East side of the DPAC building near the Tech Lending desk. These are available on a first-come, first-served basis unless reserved for use by the Library.

CMC Library

The CMC Library offers two group study rooms. One is available for reservations through libcal, while the other is available on-site on a first-come-first-served basis. These rooms are available for currently enrolled UCF students, who may book a maximum of four hours per day.

General Policies for Study Room Use

To ensure fair access and proper use of study spaces, UCF Libraries have established several policies:

  • Eligibility: Study rooms are generally available for currently enrolled UCF students, faculty, and staff.
  • Reservation Limits: Individuals may book a maximum of four hours per day.
  • Grace Period: There is a 15-minute grace period for reservations before they are canceled as no-shows.
  • Overdue Fines: Overdue fines for study rooms are $1.00 per hour.
  • Equipment: Users are prohibited from disconnecting or reconfiguring any devices in the room.

Tools for Monitoring Space Availability: Occuspace

UCF Libraries utilize Occuspace sensors to monitor space usage and provide real-time information on availability. Occuspace sensors scan for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signal activity in an area, picking up laptops, cell phones, wearables, and other connected devices. The system collects zero personally identifiable information (PII) and is fully GDPR and CCPA compliant. Occuspace sensors never connect to any devices and can only passively observe the BLE and Wi-Fi activity in a space being measured.
