Navigating Textbook Purchases at UCF: A Comprehensive Guide
For students attending the University of Central Florida (UCF), acquiring the necessary textbooks and course materials is a crucial part of their academic journey. Recognizing the financial challenges this can present, UCF offers several resources and programs to assist students in accessing affordable learning materials. This article provides a detailed overview of the UCF Bookstore, financial aid options for textbook purchases, and the university's initiatives to promote instructional material affordability.
The UCF Bookstore: Your On-Campus Resource
The UCF Bookstore serves as a primary hub for students seeking textbooks and course materials. Students registered for classes at any of the UCF Connect Campuses are likely to purchase textbooks/course materials from the bookstore on that campus site. The bookstore offers a wide selection of new and used textbooks, as well as digital resources and other academic supplies.
Financial Aid Programs for Textbook Assistance
Recognizing that financial aid disbursements often occur after the start of the semester, UCF provides two key programs to help students purchase textbooks in the interim: the Textbook Purchase Program and the Short Term Advance for Books. Financial aid disbursements begin during the second week of each semester, so students will not receive their financial aid refunds to buy books until then. For this reason, there are two programs to assist financial aid recipients with purchasing their textbooks: the Textbook Purchase Program and the Short Term Advance for Books.
Textbook Purchase Program
The Textbook Purchase Program allows eligible students to purchase required books and supplies at the on-campus UCF Bookstores using their UCF ID Card. Eligible students can then purchase up to $600 on required books and supplies at the on-campus UCF Bookstores by simply presenting their UCF ID Card. For consideration, students must “opt-in” each semester on their myUCF Student Center. Only the amount spent at the UCF Bookstores will be added as a charge to the student’s account. Once financial aid is disbursed, it will pay off this charge after other UCF expenses are paid. The Textbook Purchase Program is available three weeks before classes begin and the first week of classes each semester.
Short Term Advance for Books
The Short Term Advance is available to assist students with books and supplies expenses by “advancing” up to $600 of their financial aid to them. The students receive the funding via direct deposit or check, and then may use it at any bookstore to purchase their books. Once financial aid disburses, the Short Term Advance debt is paid, along with other university expenses. A $5.00 non-refundable processing fee will be assessed and added to the balance of the advance. Please Note: Short Term Advance eligibility is determined by the information available at the time the application is reviewed.

UCF's Commitment to Affordable Instructional Materials
UCF is dedicated to reducing the financial burden of textbooks and instructional materials on its students. Textbook and instructional materials affordability and transparency is governed by Florida Statute 1004.085 and Florida Board of Governors Regulation 8.003. Textbook and instructional materials adoptions are due no later than 60 days prior to the start of the semester for all courses taught that term. Please note, these are the university deadlines.
