Understanding the Cost of Attendance (COA)
Your Cost of Attendance (COA) is a financial aid budget designed to help you plan and manage your expenses while earning your degree at UB. It is used to determine the maximum amount of financial aid you can receive for a semester or academic year, based on federal and institutional guidelines. Your actual costs may vary. Financial aid can be used to cover reasonable educational expenses, even if they differ from the estimates.
What’s Included in the COA?
The COA includes both direct and indirect costs. Direct Costs are expenses billed directly by UB, such as tuition and fees and on-campus housing and meal plans. Indirect Costs are estimated expenses you may have while attending UB, but are not billed by the university: off-campus housing and meals, books and supplies, transportation, personal expenses, and loan fees.
Financial Aid and Affordability
Financial Aid Statistics
Fifty-seven percent of first-year students receive need-based financial aid, and the average net price for federal loan recipients is $19,592. The four-year graduation rate is 60%. Six years after graduation, the median salary for graduates is $53,742.
Need More Financial Support?
If your actual expenses are higher than UB’s estimated cost of attendance, you may be eligible for a budget increase. These requests are reviewed individually and must meet specific criteria: Expenses must be in your name, Costs must be incurred during the current academic year. You’ll need to complete the Budget Increase Request Form and submit it with supporting documents to the Financial Aid Office before the last day of classes. For questions or help with the process, contact the Financial Aid Office.
Comparing Offers
Some colleges may advertise generous scholarships, but those offers can be tied to much higher overall costs. It’s important to look beyond the headline numbers and compare the full picture-tuition, fees, housing, and the actual out-of-pocket cost after aid. A smaller scholarship at a school with lower overall costs might offer better value in the long run. Take time to review each financial aid offer carefully to understand what your family will really be expected to pay.
Transparency and Commitment to Affordability
The University at Buffalo is committed to transparency regarding college costs. Earning your MD is a major investment. We provide an affordable, quality medical education.

Financial Liability Deadlines
When you register, you assume responsibility for paying all tuition and fees associated with your enrollment/registration. You must pay even if you did not attend a single class unless you have dropped or resigned your courses according to the published deadlines. This applies to those who are withdrawing from the University or those who have fallen below full-time status.
Our MD program follows the liability deadlines listed below based on a standard fifteen (15) week course. The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences has many non-standard courses in the year one and two curriculum. Tuition liability is calculated proportionally based on the number of weeks in a class.
Important Budget Planning Notes
- Tuition and fees reflect an estimated cost of full-time enrollment.
- Tuition is set by the State University of New York; it is subject to change without notice.
- Fees include the student activity fee, comprehensive fees, the international student fee and international student health insurance.
- Living Expenses are based on average on-campus residence hall costs; this cost will vary slightly depending on room occupancy and dormitory.
- Books and personal school supplies are not included. Students should budget $1,000-$1,500 per semester. Some programs, such as architecture, art programs and health-related programs may have significantly higher costs for supplies.
- Personal and incidental costs are not included.
