Trevon Diggs: From College Standout to NFL Interception Leader

Trevon De'Sean Diggs, born on September 20, 1998, is an American professional football cornerback who currently plays in the NFL. His journey to the professional level began with a successful high school career, followed by a stint with the Alabama Crimson Tide, and ultimately led to being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys.

Early Years

Diggs' football career started at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville, Maryland, where he showcased his athletic abilities on both sides of the ball. He excelled as a defensive back and a wide receiver. As a junior, Diggs recorded 78 receptions for 1,008 yards and 15 touchdowns. As a senior, he amassed 1,269 receiving yards. His outstanding performance earned him two All-Washington, D.C. Metro selections as a receiver.

College Career

In 2016, Diggs started his college football career as a true freshman at the University of Alabama. He played safety, wide receiver, and was a return specialist. In 2017, during his sophomore year, Diggs transitioned to cornerback full-time. He started the season opener against Florida State but was later surpassed on the depth chart by Levi Wallace. During that season, he recorded six tackles and three passes defended.

NFL Career

2020 Season

The Dallas Cowboys selected Diggs in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The Cowboys signed Diggs to a four-year, $6.32 million rookie contract that included $3.04 million guaranteed and a signing bonus of $2.15 million. Diggs made his professional debut in the Cowboys' season-opener against the Los Angeles Rams, recording three combined tackles. In Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, he had nine solo tackles and one pass deflection. During the game, he chased down D. K. Metcalf, preventing a touchdown by punching the ball out of Metcalf's grasp, resulting in a touchback. In Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns, Diggs recorded his first career sack on Baker Mayfield.

In Week 8, during a Sunday Night Football game against the Philadelphia Eagles, Diggs had seven combined tackles, four pass deflections, and his first two career interceptions, one of which was against Carson Wentz. In Week 9, he sustained a foot injury during the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which eventually led to him being placed on injured reserve on November 18, 2020. On December 19, 2020, the Cowboys activated Diggs from injured reserve. 2021 Season

In 2021, the Cowboys hired Dan Quinn as their new defensive coordinator.

Diggs started the season strong, recording an interception in the season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers, he had his second interception. In Week 3, he recorded a pick-six against Jalen Hurts in a game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for September. In Week 4, Diggs had two interceptions against Sam Darnold, earning him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

In Week 6, Diggs recorded his second pick-six of the season against Mac Jones. This marked his sixth consecutive game with an interception, tying an NFL record. By this point, Diggs had already joined Hall of Famer Rod Woodson in recording seven interceptions in the first six games of a season. In Week 13, he intercepted a pass by Taysom Hill. On December 26, 2021, Diggs set a career-high with his 11th interception of the season, tying the Cowboys' franchise record for most interceptions in a single season.

Diggs was placed in COVID-19 protocol and was inactive for their Week 18 matchup at the Philadelphia Eagles.

2022 Season

Diggs secured a win against the New York Giants by intercepting a pass by Daniel Jones in Week 3. In Week 4, he intercepted a pass thrown by Carson Wentz. In Week 8, he collected a season-high eight combined tackles as the Cowboys defeated the Chicago Bears.

2023 Season

In Week 2 against the New York Jets, Diggs made his lone interception of the season. On September 21, 2023, Diggs tore the ACL in his left knee during practice and was ruled out for the rest of the season. He finished the season with four solo tackles, three pass deflections, and one interception in two games.

2024 Season

On February 12, 2024, the Dallas Cowboys hired Mike Zimmer to be their defensive coordinator. Diggs started training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he was still recovering from his torn ACL.

Diggs started in the Dallas Cowboys' season-opener at the Cleveland Browns and made five combined tackles, a pass deflection, and intercepted a pass by Deshaun Watson. In Week 10, he intercepted a pass thrown by Jalen Hurts. In Week 11, he set a season-high with six solo tackles. He was inactive for the next two games due to a groin injury. On December 14, 2024, the Cowboys announced that Diggs would miss the rest of the season and would undergo surgery to repair a knee injury in the same leg as his ACL tear the prior year, which he had been dealing with for most of the season.

2025 Season

On October 25, 2025, Diggs was placed on injured reserve due to lingering concussion symptoms. He was activated on December 20, ahead of the team's Week 16 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. In eight total appearances for Dallas, Diggs recorded 25 combined tackles. On December 31, 2025, Diggs was claimed off waivers by the Green Bay Packers. He made two appearances for the team in their season finale and Wild Card game, recording three combined tackles.
