Origins and Vision
The Roux Institute is a graduate campus and research center affiliated with Northeastern University. David Roux, a technology entrepreneur and investor and co-founder of Silver Lake, played a pivotal role in its establishment. Roux, who spent his youth in Lewiston, Maine, sought to give back to his home state by promoting the technology sector. He partnered with Northeastern University to expand research and educational opportunities in Maine.

The Roux Institute has launched several key initiatives and programs to further its mission:
- Clean Tech Incubator: In 2023, the Roux Institute received $975,000 from the Maine Governor’s Energy Office to develop the Clean Tech Incubator, supporting the growth of clean energy technologies.
- Graduate Degrees in Computer Science: The Roux Institute offers graduate degrees in computer science, addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals in this field.
- Future of Healthcare Founder Residency: Launched in 2023 and funded by Northern Light Health and MaineHealth, this three-month intensive program provides healthcare companies with access to international experts in their respective fields.
Campus Development
The Roux Institute campus is under construction in the East Deering neighborhood of Portland, on a waterfront parcel. The new campus is designed to provide public waterfront access, paths, and trails. The 13.5-acre campus will incorporate the former B&M Baked Beans factory building, considered an "iconic" part of the city, while other buildings on the site have been demolished. The approved site plan includes a 238,000 square foot academic building designed by CambridgeSeven, a parking garage, and a child care facility. The Roux Institute plans to build up to 250 student housing units in the first five years, with a potential for up to 650 units within two decades. The site design takes into account sea level rise and climate change, with measures such as raising the existing pier and locating bike storage on the first floor of the former B&M Baked Beans factory.
Collaboration with Maine's Public Universities
The establishment of the Roux Institute was welcomed by Maine's public universities. Joan Ferrini-Mundy, president of the University of Maine, indicated that the two universities would develop "pathways programs" as the first step towards a deeper partnership.
Founder Residency Program
Since its inception, the Roux Institute’s Founder Residency has annually selected ten early-stage, technology-based startups-particularly those led by underrepresented founders-to participate in a year-long, equity-light accelerator hosted at its Portland, Maine campus.
Experiential Learning and Co-ops
As the world leader in experiential learning, Northeastern has a history of aligning students’ learning with employers’ needs. The Roux Institute now partners with Maine companies to equip the workforce with essential tech skills and advance research and development. By alternating semesters of academic study with periods of full-time work, students can transition between academic and professional contexts. Co-ops can spark innovation for organizations by bringing students with diverse backgrounds, an enthusiastic and fresh perspective, and up-to-date technical knowledge and skills, while meeting hiring needs in a strategic, cost-effective way.

With $100M in scholarships from the Harold Alfond Foundation®, the Roux Institute is proud to offer the Alfond Scholars Initiative. We’re providing recent college graduates, bachelor’s degree and PhD holders, Northeastern undergraduates, and employer partners with essential capabilities in data and computer science, the life sciences, and artificial intelligence. Our programs support learners in gaining skills through real-world assignments with Maine employers.
