Teniya Morant, the younger sister of NBA sensation Ja Morant, has navigated a significant turn in her collegiate basketball career. From High School Standout to MVSU Commitment
Teniya Morant established herself as a formidable player at Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee. As a senior guard, the 5-foot-3 athlete played a pivotal role in the Mustangs' success, contributing to their 16-6 record. Her individual statistics underscored her impact, averaging 12.6 points per game, 4.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.4 steals. A season-high performance of 22 points in a 70-45 victory over St. Benedict further highlighted her capabilities on the court.
Despite initial recruiting challenges, Teniya's talent eventually garnered national attention. In May 2023, she committed to Mississippi Valley State University (MVSU), an HBCU competing in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). This decision held particular significance as MVSU was the first Division I program to offer her a scholarship, extending the offer in January of that year.

Teniya's commitment to MVSU was viewed as a potential turning point for the women's basketball program. The Devilettes were coming off a challenging season, finishing with a 2-27 record and a winless 0-18 mark in the SWAC. Her addition was anticipated to inject new energy and talent into the team.
Justin Lewis, Teniya's high school coach, emphasized her tenacity and work ethic, stating, "They’re getting a tenacious player that gives it her all on the floor. Somebody that’s going to be vocal."

However, Teniya Morant's time with Mississippi Valley State was shorter than anticipated. She appeared in three games during the 2024-25 season, logging limited minutes and not recording any points, rebounds, or assists. On April 3, 2025, she announced her decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal, signaling her departure from the MVSU women's basketball program.
As of the 2025-26 season, Teniya Morant is listed on the women's basketball roster at Ranger College in Texas, marking a new chapter in her athletic career.

Even as Teniya Morant moved on, the Morant family continues to show up. NBA star Ja Morant and his mother, Jamie Morant, have stepped in to sponsor the HBCU women’s basketball program, providing the Devilettes with exclusive Nike Ja 3 sneakers in multiple colorways. In addition, Jamie Morant gifted the team brand-new all-white game jerseys, giving the program a visible boost both on and off the court. Mississippi Valley State shared the moment on social media, thanking Ja Morant and his mother for their continued investment in the program. The colorways varied across the roster. Some players wore green-and-white pairs that matched Valley’s team colors.
This is not Ja Morant’s first time supporting Mississippi Valley State. Now, with the Nike Ja 3, the relationship between the NBA star and the HBCU has grown stronger. For Mississippi Valley State women’s basketball, that support matters.
Mississippi Valley State operates with one of the smallest athletic budgets in the NCAA. Because of those limitations, Valley teams often lack access to resources many Division I programs take for granted. Against that reality, the Morants’ contribution stands out. New uniforms and player-exclusive shoes represent more than style. Instead, their continued involvement sends a clear message.
