Technology and Livelihood Education Curriculum: Shaping Future Educators and Entrepreneurs
The Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) curriculum plays a vital role in the Philippine education system, aiming to equip students with practical skills and knowledge for future careers and entrepreneurial ventures. This article explores the various facets of the TLE curriculum, its objectives, and its impact on students and educators.
BTLED Program: Developing Future TLE Teachers
The Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education (BTLED) program is specifically designed to prepare future educators to teach TLE subjects in Grades 4 to 8 within the basic education system. Graduates of the BTLED program are eligible to take the Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET), allowing them to practice the teaching profession in the field of TLE, specifically as EPP (Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan) teachers for Grades 4-6 and TLE teachers for Grades 7-8. Furthermore, BTLED graduates can also qualify as TVET (Technical-Vocational Education and Training) Trainers and Assessors upon obtaining the necessary certification.
CP-TLE: Career Pathways in Technology and Livelihood Education
TLE is also sometimes referred to as CP-TLE, which stands for Career Pathways in Technology and Livelihood Education. The 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum allocates 240 minutes per week for CP-TLE, equivalent to 1.2 units, highlighting the importance placed on this subject area.
Technical-Vocational Education-Based TLE: Focus on Technical Skills
This approach to TLE emphasizes the development of technical skills in various areas. In Grades 7 and 8, during the exploratory phase, students are introduced to five common competencies based on the training regulations of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). These competencies include:
- Mensuration and Calculation
- Technical Drafting
- Use of Tools and Equipment
- Maintenance of Tools and Equipment
- Occupational Health and Safety
This focus on technical skills aims to provide students with a foundation for further specialization in technical-vocational fields.

Entrepreneurship Education-Based TLE: Cultivating Entrepreneurial Mindsets
This approach to TLE focuses on equipping students with livelihood skills that can be used to start small household enterprises with family members. It covers three key domains:
- Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies
- Market and Environment
- Process and Delivery
By focusing on these domains, the Entrepreneurship Education-based TLE aims to cultivate entrepreneurial mindsets and provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to become successful entrepreneurs.
Expansion of CP-TLE in the 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum
The 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum expanded the CP-TLE program to include additional special curricular programs, further enhancing the scope and relevance of TLE in secondary education.
Important Considerations Regarding Data and Evaluation
It is crucial to consider the following points when interpreting data related to TLE and other subjects:
- No comparison of test scores across school years: Test items can vary in difficulty from year to year, making it inaccurate to compare scores across different school years. Additionally, the schools and learners selected to take the tests may differ each year, which affects the modality of test administration, whether census or sampling. Consequently, differences in math or numeracy scores between 2017 and 2024 may not indicate an actual improvement in learning outcomes at the school.
- No Ranking of schools: Schools operate within different contexts that can explain variations in learning outcomes. Factors contributing to these differences may include income, size and location of the school, learner-teacher or classroom-teacher ratios, access to resources and funding, teaching and learning delivery methods, and the size of the student population.
These considerations are essential for ensuring fair and accurate assessments of educational outcomes.
