Sylhet Engineering College: A Hub of Engineering Education in Bangladesh
Sylhet Engineering College (SEC), established in 2007, stands as a prominent public undergraduate engineering college in Bangladesh. Affiliated with the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), SEC aims to produce highly skilled engineers for the 21st century. Located in Sylhet, a divisional city that previously lacked a full-fledged undergraduate engineering institute, SEC has rapidly evolved into a vital engineering educational hub.
Historical Overview and Affiliation
Sylhet Engineering College (SEC) was established in 2007 under the Directorate of Technical Education and affiliated with School of Applied Sciences & Technology, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. SEC obtained formal affiliation in 2007 with the School of Applied Sciences and Technology at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), through which it awards B.Sc. degrees. From its inception, SEC has been affiliated with Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), through which it awards B.Sc. degrees.
Transition and Expansion
Academic operations commenced in 2007 with the admission of the first batch of students in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, marking the college's transition from planning to active instruction. The college's enrollment has expanded considerably since its early years, transitioning from initial small cohorts to an annual intake of 180 students distributed across its engineering programs.
Campus Overview and Infrastructure
With state-of-the-art facilities and a marvelous landscape of campus, Sylhet Engineering College has become an engineering educational hub of Bangladesh. The Sylhet Engineering College (SEC) campus is located at Tilagarh, approximately one kilometer away from the center of Sylhet city. The campus includes three large academic buildings, a library and computer center, an admin building, the principal's quarter, and teachers and staff quarters. There are 16 multi-storied buildings included three large academic buildings, library and computer building, administrative building, the principal's residence, teachers and staff quarters.
The campus is enveloped by the region's scenic landscape, including proximity to the Surma River and expansive tea gardens that characterize the Surma Valley. These natural features enhance the aesthetic appeal and offer a verdant backdrop to the urban setting.

Residential Facilities
Sylhet Engineering College offers on-campus residential accommodations through dedicated halls to support students, particularly those from outside the local area. There are three residential halls (five storeyed hall each), two halls for males and one hall for females. Each hall features shared rooms, along with common rooms for recreation, dedicated study areas to facilitate academic focus, and an on-site mess providing meals to residents. Room allocation prioritizes outstation students to ensure accessibility for those traveling from distant regions, with selections managed by hall administration based on enrollment status and availability.
Academic Departments and Programs
Sylhet Engineering College operates through three core engineering departments, each dedicated to delivering specialized undergraduate education in key engineering disciplines affiliated with Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering began operations in the 2007-2008 academic year, followed by the Departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Civil Engineering. Significant milestones in the college's development include the launch of its core departments, beginning with Computer Science and Engineering in the 2007-08 academic session, followed by Electrical and Electronic Engineering around 2008 and Civil Engineering in 2015 to broaden disciplinary offerings.
Sylhet Engineering College offers Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Engineering degrees in three disciplines: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), and Civil Engineering (CE). The following departments offer 4 years B.Sc. B.Sc. B.Sc. B.Sc.
Curriculum and Course Structure
The curriculum for all programs totals approximately 160 credit hours, with slight variations by department-such as 161.5 credits for CSE-encompassing foundational, core, and elective courses. The first two years emphasize foundation courses in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and basic engineering sciences, building essential analytical and scientific skills. Laboratory facilities at the college are designed to provide hands-on training in engineering disciplines, with modern equipment integrated into departmental programs.
As part of the 2024-2025 curriculum updates aligned with Outcome-Based Education (OBE) standards, the programs incorporate emerging topics to enhance relevance. In CSE, courses on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning have been integrated into the upper-level specialized curriculum to address modern computational challenges.

Annual Intake
The annual intake is 189 students across the three departments, with 63 seats allocated to each program, as of the 2024-2025 academic year.
Admission Requirements and Process
Admission into SEC is highly competitive and needs a high academic attainment at the SSC and HSC level. Selection of the students for admission is made through a written admission test.
Candidates are required to have passed the SSC or equivalent examination in 2021 or 2022 and the HSC or equivalent in 2023 or 2024, achieving a minimum GPA of 3.00 in each examination separately, along with a combined total GPA of at least 7.00. Additionally, a minimum GPA of 3.00 is mandated in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry at the HSC level.
The merit list is prepared by combining secondary results and test performance, with SSC GPA multiplied by 20, HSC GPA multiplied by 20, and the full admission test score out of 100 added together for a total evaluation. This formula emphasizes both academic background and entrance performance, with separate lists for freedom fighters' quotas and other reserved categories if applicable.
Student Life and Activities
Classes are held every day from 8 am to 5 pm without weekly holidays (Thursday & Friday). All academic activities are maintained by administrative office. A typical student's day involves a structured sequence of lectures, tutorials, laboratory sessions, and group projects, fostering both theoretical knowledge and collaborative problem-solving skills. Student governance is supported by elected class representatives who coordinate with faculty on academic matters, while departmental clubs facilitate peer-led initiatives in technical skill-building and minor extracurricular engagements.

Annual cultural events at the college include Freshers' Welcome for new students, Independence Day celebrations on March 26, Pohela Boishakh on April 14 marking the Bengali New Year, and graduation ceremonies honoring graduating batches, all of which feature performances, speeches, and community gatherings.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
Sylhet Engineering College students have access to several financial support mechanisms designed to recognize academic excellence and assist those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. As an affiliated institution of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), the college's students are also eligible for university-specific scholarships targeted at high achievers. Need-based financial aid is available through college-managed funds to support low-income students facing economic hardships. In every semester, the government would give 1950 taka per students for basis in CGPA (Top 60% in per batch or department).
Leadership and Administration
Institutional leadership has seen transitions to guide this progress, with Md. Asaduzzaman serving as principal in additional charge as of November 2025, overseeing daily operations and academic administration. The role of SUST's vice-chancellor, currently Professor Dr. A. M.
Future Aspirations
It is expected that, Sylhet Engineering College will be upgraded to a full-fledged public university and will be named Sylhet University of Engineering and Technology (SUET). After completing graduation, there is a scope to study abroad with scholarship which is counted by the rank of the Shahjalal University of Science & Technology.
