Navigating Swiss Airlines Student Discount Policy: A Comprehensive Guide

Planning studies abroad involves many logistical considerations, and air travel is a significant one. Swiss Airlines offers student fares to ease this burden, but understanding the specifics of their policy is crucial. This guide provides a detailed overview of Swiss Airlines' student discount policy, covering eligibility, baggage allowances, booking procedures, and other essential aspects.

Eligibility and Registration

To access Swiss Airlines' student fares, students must first register for a Travel ID on the Swiss Airlines website. After registering, students need to verify their student status within the 'Profile' section of their account. The student verification is valid for one year. It's important to note that student fares are exclusively available on flights operated by the Lufthansa Group.

Booking Student Fares

Student fares must be searched for and booked specifically from the designated student fare page on the Swiss Airlines website. When selecting flights, student fares are easily identifiable by a "Student" icon. It's crucial to always search for student fares from the dedicated page and ensure that the origin and destination are eligible for student fare offerings. Bookings should be made for one student per booking.

Baggage Allowance for Students

One of the significant benefits of Swiss Airlines' student fares is the enhanced baggage allowance. Most student fares include a checked-in baggage allowance of two bags, each weighing no more than 23kg. However, it's important to check the specific conditions for the selected flight on the flight selection page, as baggage allowances can vary. Notably, all student fares originating from the USA include a checked-in baggage allowance of only one bag, with a maximum weight of 23kg.

In addition to checked baggage, students are also permitted to carry one item of cabin baggage weighing no more than 8kg, along with another small personal item.

Managing Bookings and Rebooking

Swiss Airlines allows students to manage their bookings online, including rescheduling, rebooking, or canceling flights. To do so, students can log in to their booking through the Swiss Airlines website. When rebooking, it is crucial to select the student fare option again to retain the student fare benefits, such as the additional baggage allowance.

Earning Miles & Status Miles

Miles & Smiles members can accrue Miles and Status Miles on flights operated by Swiss International Air Lines. However, mileage accrual is determined based on the fare classes set by the operating airline. On codeshare flights, the Turkish Airlines (THY) fare class indicated on the ticket may differ from the operating airline’s fare class. If the fare class designated by the operating airline does not qualify for mileage accrual, miles cannot be earned for that flight. It is advisable to retain the original boarding pass and a copy of the ticket until the Miles accrued from the flight appear on the Miles&Smiles account statement.

General Baggage Policies (Applicable to All Passengers)

While student fares offer specific benefits, it's important to understand Swiss Airlines' general baggage policies applicable to all passengers.

Hand Baggage

Swiss Airlines allows passengers to carry hand baggage, with specific allowances depending on the fare class and route. On European routes in Economy Class, the lowest fares may only include a hand baggage allowance, while Classic and Flex fares include one item of checked baggage.

Checked Baggage

The quantity and weight of checked baggage permitted depend on the route, fare class, and passenger status. Top Tier Customers (status customers) receive additional baggage allowance on Classic, Flex, and Business fares.

For intercontinental flights, similar fare options exist, with Economy Saver, Economy, and Economy Flex fares including one item of checked baggage. Infants (excluding those traveling on Light fares) are entitled to one item of baggage weighing a maximum amount.

Size and Weight Restrictions

Checked baggage must not exceed total dimensions of 158 cm (width + height + depth). Overweight or oversized items are subject to excess baggage charges.

Excess Baggage

A charge applies for each additional baggage item exceeding the free baggage allowance.

Special Items

Small children in all fare classes are entitled to a foldable pushchair or fully foldable travel pram.

Baggage Rules on Connecting Flights

When Swiss Airlines markets the geographically longest or most significant section of the journey (LX flight number), their baggage provisions generally apply. However, if another airline markets the most significant section, that airline’s baggage provisions may apply, even on Swiss flights or Swiss flight numbers. The free baggage allowance may also change if the trip is interrupted or if separate flight tickets are used for one journey. The applicable free baggage allowance is always shown on the e-ticket.

Exception for Flights To/From the USA/Canada

For flights where the origin or destination is in the USA or Canada, consumer protection laws dictate that the free baggage allowances and fees of the first carrier on interline flights, or the first marketing carrier on codeshare flights, apply to all subsequent flights in the itinerary.

Flights To/From Specific US Airports

On flights between the USA and India, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates, the aforementioned rule applies only if departing from or landing at specific US airports, including Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Charlotte, New York, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia, Detroit, Miami, San Diego, San José, Tampa, Austin, and Orlando.

Enhancing the Travel Experience

Swiss Airlines aims to provide a pleasant travel experience. Passengers can enjoy culinary highlights and a wide range of eJournals with international newspapers and magazines, available for free download to mobile devices. The SWISS App assists passengers in tracking flight status, checking in, and accessing boarding passes via their smartphones.
