Because we know in order to change outcomes for our students we have to also change outcomes for the family." This access extends beyond student use, empowering family members to pursue their own educational and professional goals. “So if a family member needed to work on a resume, apply for a job or complete a postsecondary education, for example, they could use our hubs for that,” Lee said. The hubs “also serve as a cozy, intimate, welcoming space … where parents can feel more relaxed and feel more like we are here to be partners in this work and that we're embracing them into our school community,” Lee added. Since then, hubs have also opened at Walnut Hill Elementary School, Lakemont Elementary School, Westview Early Childhood Education Center and - most recently - Cool Spring Elementary School in January. Moving forward, Petersburg’s Family Engagement team hopes to establish Family Empowerment Hubs at all of Petersburg’s schools, including middle and high schools. This expansion reflects the commitment to providing equitable access to resources for all families within the district.
Recognizing that not all parents can physically visit the hubs, PCPS offers virtual resources as well. “When our parents create an account, they have access to videos and resources that will help them support their learners and build a bond with their students at home, even if they are not able to physically make it into our hub.” This virtual component ensures that all families, regardless of their circumstances, can benefit from the resources and support offered by PCPS.
