Navigating Student Aid in Alberta: A Comprehensive Guide to Funding Your Education
Are you an Alberta resident eager to pursue higher education but concerned about the cost? Don't let financial worries extinguish your academic aspirations. Alberta offers a variety of student aid programs designed to help you achieve your educational goals. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the available options, including grants, loans, and scholarships, to help you navigate the world of student financial assistance.
Grants: Non-Repayable Financial Aid
Grants are an excellent option for students facing financial challenges, as they do not require repayment (except in specific cases of breached terms). The province of Alberta offers several grant programs to support post-secondary students.
Alberta Student Grant for Full-Time Students
This grant is specifically for students enrolled in full-time post-secondary courses. Eligibility is determined by the student's or their family's annual income falling below a threshold set by the Alberta government. The grant amount is inversely proportional to the annual income, decreasing as income increases until a certain limit.
Alberta Student Grant for Part-Time Students
Similar to the full-time grant, this program assists part-time students who face financial difficulties in pursuing post-secondary education.
Alberta Grant for Students with Disabilities
Recognizing the unique challenges students with disabilities may encounter, this grant aims to facilitate their transition into and success in post-secondary programs.

Loans: Repayable Financial Assistance
Student loans, unlike grants, require repayment. However, they provide crucial financial support, often through combined provincial and federal programs.
Provincial and Canada Student Loans
To access these loans, applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or diploma program at an institution or university affiliated with the government loan scheme. After registration, students are directed to apply for student loans directly with their provincial student loan service center.
Train Alberta is a Designated Educational Institution, students in the Early Learning and Childcare Programs (Certificate and Diploma) are eligible to receive Provincial and Canada student loans.
Canada Student Loans Program (CSLP)
The Canada Student Loans Program (CSLP) offers financial assistance to those students who have been out of high school for four years and do not have parental annual gross income as a factor in determining the amount of their loan. This is important, as many students studying in Ireland have completed a four-year undergraduate bachelor’s degree at the time of entering one of the universities. The University of Galway (UG), The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain), Trinity College Dublin (TCD), University College Cork (UCC), University College Dublin (UCD), University of Limerick (UL) and Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) are considered eligible institutions by the Canadian Ministry of Education. The CSLP delivers student financial assistance in partnership with most provinces and territories. Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Québec do not participate in CSLP directly but offer their own financial assistance programs for students. These loans are interest-subsidized by the Canadian government while the student is enrolled in school and maintaining satisfactory academic progress, as determined by the individual province.
Scholarships: Recognizing Excellence
Provincial scholarships reward students who demonstrate exceptional abilities in academics, athletics, or community service.

Additional Funding Options
Federal Student Aid
Even if you don't qualify for provincial aid, numerous federal options are available, including Federal Student Grants, Federal Student Loans, Federal Student Scholarships, and Federal Student Bursaries.
Canada-Alberta Job Grant
Employers may be eligible to receive the Canada-Alberta Job Grant when they contribute to an employee's training costs with Train Alberta.
Alberta Child Care Grant Funding
Students in the Early Learning and Childcare Program (Certificate and Diploma) may apply for and receive Professional Development Funding, provided they meet the eligibility criteria as indicated in the Alberta Child Care Grant Funding Guide.

Repaying Your Student Loans
Paying back your student loans needs to be one of your top priorities once you graduate. Based on your personal or family budget, you’ll need to decide how to incorporate your monthly loan payment so that it just becomes another bill you pay. There are many ways to make sure your student loan repayment plan doesn’t feel like too much of a burden. In Alberta, students have a number of repayment options available to them to ensure they pay back their student loans. You may want to apply for interest relief or might opt for reducing your monthly payment, which will spread your repayment over a greater number of months.
The Repayment Assistance Plan, available for both Alberta and Canada student loans makes sure your monthly payment is in sync with your income and family size. If you qualify, a reduced monthly payment will be set for six months, based on your income. Completing one RAP application will ensure you are considered for benefits on both your Canada and Alberta student loans.
To be eligible for the Repayment Assistance Plan you must meet the following conditions:
- your monthly payment amount is not in sync with your income or family size.
- your student loans are in good standing
- For Canada student loans, you must also be living in Canada.
If you are behind on your payments, you can ask for a reduced payment to be back dated for up to 6 months.
