Navigating Admissions to Stevens Institute of Technology: A Comprehensive Guide

Stevens Institute of Technology, a student-centric research university with technology at its core, is driven by the idea of building a better future through innovation. Located across the river from New York City, Stevens offers a vibrant campus and limitless opportunities, attracting students motivated by ingenuity and inventiveness. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the undergraduate admissions requirements for Stevens Institute of Technology.

Understanding the Admissions Landscape

The acceptance rate at Stevens Institute of Technology is 47.6%, indicating a moderately selective admissions process. While the school expects applicants to meet specific GPA and SAT/ACT score requirements, it also considers other factors, offering flexibility to those who exceed expectations in certain areas.

Application Requirements for First-Year Students

A first-year application should be submitted if you are a current high school student, or a high school graduate that has not been enrolled in a college or university since graduation. This includes students that have earned college credits through a high school and/or dual-enrollment curriculum. To apply for undergraduate admission to Stevens, prospective students must submit the following:

  • A completed application: Applicants can apply via the Common Application or the Coalition Application.
  • Official high school transcript: Stevens cannot accept transcripts submitted by students as official.
  • Test-optional policy: Stevens Institute of Technology will be extending its SAT/ACT test-optional policy, with some exceptions, for first-year and transfer applicants for entry terms through Fall 2029. The test optional policy will be re-evaluated after this period. If you choose to submit test scores, you may self-report them on your application portal.
  • Portfolio (For Music or Visual Arts & Technology applicants): A portfolio is strongly encouraged for applicants to Music or Visual Arts & Technology programs.
  • Admissions Interview (Optional): An admissions interview is optional for all applicants, but Accelerated Pre-Medicine and Pre-Law programs have separate interview requirements.
  • Campus Visit (Recommended): Visiting the campus is recommended for all applicants.
  • College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS Profile): The CSS Profile is required if you wish to be considered for Stevens financial aid.
  • Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA): The FAFSA is required if you wish to be considered for need-based Stevens aid, federal aid, or state aid.

After submitting your application, you will have access to your student portal. On your portal, you can view your application checklist, admission decision and all information relevant to your Stevens application. If you’re admitted, you can then use your student portal to view financial aid information, reply to your offer of admission, and access enrollment documents.

Recommended Coursework

Stevens recommends that applicants demonstrate satisfactory performance in specific academic areas, depending on their chosen major.

GPA and Standardized Test Scores

Stevens has no minimum GPA or test score requirement. Successful applicants in recent incoming classes had an average GPA of 3.8 (out of 4.0) and SAT scores in the range of 1380 to 1505. GPAs and test scores are only two indicators of your potential success at Stevens. We consider all of your application materials in making our admissions decisions.

Half the applicants admitted to Stevens Institute of Technology who submitted test scores have an SAT score between 1380 and 1505 or an ACT score of 31 and 34. However, one quarter of admitted applicants achieved scores above these ranges and one quarter scored below these ranges.

  • GPA: The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. requires you to be near the top of your class, and well above average. Your transcript should show mostly A's. If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.86, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate.
  • SAT/ACT: Stevens Institute of Technology hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. The 25th percentile SAT score is 1390, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1490. The average ACT score at Stevens Institute of Technology is 33. The 25th percentile ACT score is 31, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 34. Even though Stevens Institute of Technology likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 31 or below, you'll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application.

If you are applying to our Accelerated Pre-Medicine or Pre-Law programs, test scores must still be submitted. For Accelerated Pre-Medicine, applicants must achieve a combined SAT score of 1400 (critical reading and math) or ACT composite (with science section) of 32 in one sitting. Standardized tests must be completed prior to the November 1 application deadline and results must be submitted to Stevens via the testing agency to be considered in our review.
