Workforce Programs: Occupational and Technical Education
SVCC's occupational and technical education programs, often called Workforce programs, are tailored to address the growing demand for technicians, semi-professional workers, and skilled craftsmen in industry, business, and government. These programs prepare students for entry-level employment in diverse fields such as agriculture, business, engineering, health and medical, industrial, public service, and other technical areas.
Program Length and Design
Programs vary in length and credit requirements, each designed with a specific purpose:
- Programs of less than one year (9 to 29 credits): These programs aim to provide students with a work credential or a specific work skill.
- Programs of usually less than two years (30 to 59 credits): Similar to the shorter programs, these also focus on developing work credentials or skills.
- Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree: This degree is awarded to students who major in one of the career or technical programs.
- Associate of Arts, Science, or Business Administration Degree: This degree requires courses typically taken in the first two years of a four-year degree program. Guaranteed Admission Agreements
Through system-wide agreements, students who graduate from SVCC or any of Virginia’s 23 community colleges with an associate degree and a specific minimum grade point average can obtain guaranteed admission to over 20 of Virginia’s colleges and universities.
Dual Enrollment Program
SVCC offers a Dual Enrollment program that allows high-achieving high school students to simultaneously earn college credit while meeting their high school graduation requirements. This rigorous program provides a rewarding opportunity to advance college opportunities.
Continuing Education Courses
In partnership with "Education to Go," SVCC provides non-credit adult continuing education courses covering a wide range of interests. Tax Preparer Education
SVCC has partnered with The Income Tax School to offer courses designed to prepare individuals for the IRS Registered Tax Return Preparer (RTRP) Competency Test. The Continuing Education (CE) requirement for RTRP candidates, which began in 2012, mandates that CE hours must be taken from an IRS-approved CE provider. SVCC offers a 15-hour CE package that includes the required 10 hours of federal tax law, 3 hours of federal tax law updates, and 2 hours of ethics each calendar year.
