Southern University of Science and Technology: An Overview
The Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) stands as a pioneering institution in China's higher education landscape. Located in Shenzhen, a hub of innovation and technology, SUSTech is a municipal public university owned and funded by the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government. It was established in 2010 with a focus on science, engineering, and medicine, and has quickly risen to prominence as a leading research university.
Establishment and Early Years
SUSTech was established in 2010. In its initial year, lacking formal permission from the Ministry of Education to admit high school graduates, SUSTech uniquely admitted home-educated students. This made it the second university to cultivate home-grown talent and innovation, and promote tertiary education in China. Subsequently, it obtained the necessary permissions and now admits regular high school graduates like other universities.
Campus and Location
SUSTech is located on a large campus covering an area of 1,978,980 m2 in the Nanshan District of Shenzhen. The campus is a mix of modern buildings, streams and tree-lined green spaces. The university's location in Shenzhen, one of China's most modern and greenest cities, provides students with a dynamic and innovative environment.

All SUSTech undergraduate degree programmes are taught entirely in English and adopt the “2 + 2” academic model. This model consists of taking foundational courses and general education the first and the second academic years to strengthen their grounding and general knowledge, then in the third academic year at SUSTech, students choose a major according to their strengths and academic requirements. All throughout their undergraduate studies, the university builds a platform for students to utilize and explore current research in a variety of disciplines and fields, and they can participate in frontier research projects with hands-on research beginning in year one.
By 2020, an additional six academic colleges were planned for establishment, including the Medical School, the Business School and the College of Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
