Social Impact Internship Programs: Empowering Students and Communities

Social impact internship programs offer a unique opportunity for students to gain valuable professional experience while contributing to meaningful social change. These programs connect students with organizations working to address critical social issues, providing them with the chance to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges and develop crucial skills. These internships deepen analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills by applying what you learn in the classroom to “real-world” challenges. Furthermore, students refine their leadership and communication skills while collaborating with nonprofits, government agencies, or social enterprises!

The Importance of Funding and Equitable Access

A significant barrier to accessing social impact internships is the financial burden they often impose on students. Many internships don’t pay or don’t pay enough to cover the cost of living in a city. These costs can be prohibitive for a student without the financial resources to pay their own way. Such financial constraints can prevent talented and passionate students from pursuing these valuable experiences. Your support will help provide students equitable access to unpaid internships.

Stipends and funding programs play a crucial role in leveling the playing field. For example, Dartmouth Partners in Community Service (DPCS) program generously funds internships through the Center for Social Impact. Through DPCS, students receive up to $6,500 in funding to pursue community-based service internships with nonprofit agencies throughout the United States and its territories. Internships must be 8 to 10 weeks in length, in-person, and for 40 hours per week.

One former intern at Senate shared: “Without the aid of the stipend, my enlightening and highly valuable time performing a government internship would have been a huge financial burden." Another student noted: “Having a stipend helped me more easily balance the daily cost of living with my academics and internship - in the fall, I was working ~60 hours a week combining unpaid interning, a job on campus, and classes, which was mentally and physically exhausting."

Finding Social Impact Internships

Several platforms and resources are available to help students find social impact internships. For MIT students, the PKG Center’s Social Impact Internships and Employment Program connects eligible students with internships and challenging work opportunities that yield significant community impact. To search for Social Impact Internships and Employment positions on MIT Handshake, use the filter feature. Scroll down to the “Labeled by Your School” field and select “PKG Funding Eligible” and/or “Federal Work-Study Eligible”. Further directions for how to search for labels on Handshake can be found here. To apply for a position, follow the instructions in the posting on Handshake or follow the guide in the video above.
