Exploring SIUE Student Employment Opportunities

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) offers a multitude of on-campus employment opportunities for its students. General Information for Student Employees

Before diving into specific roles, it's essential to understand the overarching guidelines for student employment at SIUE. Keep in mind that students must interview for such positions in person after arrival. Government regulations and University policy limit F-1 and J-1 student employment to 20 hours per week in an on-campus position while classes are in session and up to 28 hours per week during breaks. SIUE non-degree students (exchange, visiting, etc.) are not permitted to work on-campus. Continuing students may work on campus up to 28 hours/week on campus beginning after the final exam period up until the next semester start date. If necessary, students can submit a Reduced Course Load Form. Students work an average of 10 - 20 hours per week. This a temporary student work position. The Student Fitness Center is open on some designated official university holidays. Students may not work more than 28 hours per week. Furthermore, students should provide a copy of their class schedule to their supervisor as soon as they register. Campus Recreation utilizes Sling scheduling for its employees to easily view schedules.

Campus Recreation Positions

A significant number of student employment opportunities exist within Campus Recreation. These positions offer diverse experiences, from fitness and sports to facility management and graphic design.

Club Sports Assistant

Club Sports Assistants play a vital role in the organization and administration of the Club Sports program. Their responsibilities include ensuring participants swipe their SIUE student ID before participation, collecting and processing liability waivers, and communicating with club officers about field conditions. They also provide direction and support for club officers and members by serving as a liaison between sport clubs and the Campus Recreation Department. Club Sports Student Assistants are expected to work afternoons, evenings and weekend hours, manage critical incidents as necessary and perform special duties as assigned.

Intramural Sports offer several student employment avenues. These include:

  • Officials: Officiate Intramural Team Sports including Flag Football, Basketball, Softball, Floor Hockey, Soccer, Volleyball, and other Seasonal Team Sports. Work under the supervision of the Student Supervisor of Intramural Sports along with Graduate Assistant of Intramural Sports. Attendance is required for the mandatory training and evaluation sessions.

  • Supervisors: The purpose of the supervisor position is to supervise intramural team sports including flag football, volleyball, indoor soccer, outdoor soccer, basketball, softball, and other activities. Supervisors are also responsible for overseeing and managing a safe and pleasant atmosphere for intramural participants and for assisting the professional staff when needed. Attendance at mandatory supervisors, officials, and captains meetings is also required. Work under the supervision of the Graduate Assistant of Intramural Sports along with the Assistant Director of Recreation Programs.

Graphic Designer

The Graphic Design position creates flyers, posters, digital signage, and more to support Campus Recreation. Graphic Design/Art majors preferred but not necessary. Needed creativity, sense of humor, and ability to work well with others. The ability to brainstorm, design, and execute interactive activities or contests for specific audiences appropriately.

Student Facility Supervisor

The job of Student Facility Supervisor is to manage, oversee, and monitor all areas of the Student Fitness Center and Campus Recreation operation. Lead guest liaison for any rentals or reservations that may be scheduled in Campus Recreation facility areas. Must obtain/maintain CPR/AED certification within 3 mo. Provides support to staff with technical issues including printers, programs, and setting up projectors.
