Santa Fe Community College Continuing Education: Opportunities for Lifelong Learning

Santa Fe Community College (SFCC) provides diverse opportunities for personal and professional growth through its Continuing Education program. With a wide array of courses available, individuals can explore new interests, enhance their skills, and pursue lifelong learning. The program caters to a broad audience, offering accessible and affordable education to the community.

Spring and Summer Course Catalogs

SFCC releases its Continuing Education schedules online and in print. The Spring schedule features over 180 classes. Printed copies are available at Santa Fe Community College, the Santa Fe Higher Education Center, and other locations around town. The Summer 2025 Course Catalog can be found online and in print at the college, area libraries, and the Santa Fe Higher Education Center.

A Word From the Director

SFCC Director of Continuing Education Nicholas “Nick” Wernicki, Ph.D., highlights the opportunities available through the program, saying, “The New Year is a great time to explore new opportunities." Benjamin Lincoln, Director of Continuing Education, added, “We’re thrilled to unveil the Summer 2025 Continuing Education Course Catalog filled with carefully curated classes to suit the community’s needs and interests. We invite lifelong learners to immerse themselves in creativity, culture and hands-on experiences."

Partnerships and Collaborations

SFCC collaborates with various organizations to expand its class offerings and provide valuable resources to the community.

Santa Fe Small Business Development Center and Century Bank

A recent partnership with the Santa Fe Small Business Development Center and Century Bank offers a series of four in-person classes on Tuesday evenings. These classes cover small business basics from start-up to succession planning.

Deborah Collins, Director of the Santa Fe Small Business Development Center, notes, “The Santa Fe Small Business Development Center has been helping businesses start and grow since 1989. Santa Fe Community College is our host institution and this partnership with SFCC’s CE department and Century Bank makes perfect sense."

The Continuing Education program at SFCC offers a variety of courses across different disciplines, catering to diverse interests and skill levels.

Small Business Basics: From Dream to Reality

This course, taught by instructor John Self, guides aspiring entrepreneurs through the entire process of opening a business. It covers everything from initial concept to launching a successful venture. John Self’s extensive experience in restaurant management and business ownership makes him well-equipped to lead this course.

Swift and Xcode: App Development for Apple Devices

This course, taught by Jim Sanborn, Director of the Santa Fe Creative Coding Initiative, focuses on programming concepts in the Swift language and software development using the Xcode integrated development environment. Students will develop and test apps on iPads and iPhones through hands-on labs and small projects. Registration includes the test fee for students to take industry certification.

Jim Sanborn has been a computing professional for more than 40 years, working as a developer, technical leader, director, and educator for many organizations, including Intel, MITRE, UNM, and SFCC.

Language Classes

The Summer catalog features a robust Spanish language program shaped by Consuelo Byrd and Silena Maffey-Meteer. Other language class offerings include instruction in French, Arabic, and Japanese.

Fine Arts and Crafts

Participants can explore their creative side with many fine arts and crafts classes. Nyal Tack, one of the founders of the SFCC Jewelry Collective, will lead a class where participants create a small piece such as a necklace or a bracelet. Kellogg Johnson will teach Wheel Throwing and Raku, a class in clay exploration designed for those with prior experience working with clay and using a pottery wheel.

Cooking Classes

Chef Johnny Vee (Vollersten) will teach the Magic of Mole in the Las Cosas Kitchen Shoppe in DeVargas Center. Students will be immersed in the cooking traditions of the Mexican town of Oaxaca and will explore its most famous dish - mole. The class will also create a complete menu of Mexican dishes including Sopa de Tortilla, Great Guacamole, Salsa Verde (two ways), Mole Negro, Mole Colaradito and green rice, topped off with dessert Tres Leches Cake.

Santa Fe Community College's Continuing Education Department offers non-credit courses designed to enrich the lives of learners of all ages. SFCC provides affordable, high-quality programs that serve the academic, cultural, and economic needs of the community. SFCC has been a "Best for Vets" and a "Military Friendly" school.

Registration

Register as soon as possible to assure a place in the course(s) you want. If you delay, the class may either be full or cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Fees

Continuing Education classes are self-sustaining, and class fees must cover all program expenses. Fees are based on an estimated minimum number of students and are subject to change without notice.

Locations

Classes are held online, at SFCC Main Campus, at the Higher Education Center (HEC), and at other locations in and around Santa Fe. Room assignments may change without notice.
