Self-Reflection and Goal Setting

The Schwarzman application process is an opportunity to reflect on your leadership development and articulate your professional impact on global issues. Successful candidates possess a clear understanding of their skills and talents, as well as an informed perspective on how they can contribute to future roles or sectors.

Timeline and Deadlines

Note that this fellowship does NOT require institutional endorsement. However, if you start early enough, the Office of Fellowships staff will advise you on your candidacy, help you decide on recommenders, and offer essay feedback. The official application system typically opens in April. The national deadline is typically in September. For example, the National deadline in 2024 was September 12th - 3PM, Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). Some universities or colleges, especially those in the United States, may opt to establish an earlier deadline for completion of letters of recommendation. We encourage all currently enrolled undergraduate students to check with their university or college contact about any internal/campus-specific procedures that need to be followed.

Components of the Application

The Schwarzman Scholars application comprises several key components:

  • Online Application Form
  • Resumé/CV
  • Transcripts
  • Essays
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Video Introduction (Optional)

1. Online Application Form

The online application form requires you to create a profile and enter biographical information, including your address, education history, professional experience, leadership experiences, awards and recognitions, language skills, and other interests/activities.

2. Resumé/CV

Upload an updated resumé or CV that highlights your leadership experiences, professional experiences, education, and other activities. The limit is two pages. Tailor your resume to focus on your demonstrated leadership. Include relevant details that otherwise may not be present in your application. Don’t get lost in the details. Some applicants spend much of your valuable word count on the setting of a story. Instead, think big picture.

3. Transcripts

The online application requires you to upload your academic transcripts from all institutions. Request your official AC transcript and study abroad or transfer college transcripts early enough to get them in the portal by the deadline. See the Schwarzman Application Instructions page for details on required educational transcript upload.

4. Essays

The essays are a critical component of your application, providing an opportunity to showcase your personality, leadership skills, and vision.

Two Required Essay Prompts:

  • Statement of Purpose (500 words): Discuss your professional/academic interests and goals. Identify a specific social, cultural, business, policy, or global issue that motivates you. Explain how you developed this interest, why it will continue in the future, the major factors involved, and your leadership vision for driving positive global change.
  • Leadership Essay (750 words): Describe a distinct example that illustrates your leadership style. Use a story or narrative from your professional, academic, or personal life. Highlight areas of personal growth, how the example shaped you as a leader, and why it will continue to do so.

Tips for Writing Compelling Essays:

  • Authenticity: Be genuine and let your personality shine through.
  • Clarity: Write clearly and concisely, ensuring your ideas are easily understood.
  • Storytelling: Use narratives to illustrate your experiences and leadership qualities.
  • Focus: Address the prompt directly and avoid unnecessary details.
  • Relevance: Connect your experiences and goals to the Schwarzman Scholars program and its mission.
  • Proofread: Carefully review your essays for errors in grammar and spelling.
  • Get Feedback: Seek input from mentors, professors, or advisors.

5. Letters of Recommendation

The program requires three letters of recommendation. Choose recommenders who can speak to your leadership skills, academic promise, and professional accomplishments. Provide your recommenders with your essays and resume to help them write strong letters. The letters should be written in English. If not, a translation must be provided and combined with the original letter uploaded by the recommender. Deadline for recommenders to submit these letters is typically in September. Recommenders should know you well and be able to speak to your leadership experience and potential, intellectual abilities, and/or character.

Who to Ask:

  • Professors who know your academic abilities.
  • Employers, supervisors, mentors, faculty members, or advisors who can speak to your leadership abilities.

How to Ask:

  • Approach potential recommenders well in advance of the deadline.
  • Provide them with your resume, essays, and a clear explanation of the Schwarzman Scholars program.
  • Share your experiences and goals to help them write a compelling letter.
  • Remind them of the deadline and follow up to ensure they submit their letters on time.

6. Video Introduction (Optional)

The 1-minute video is an optional opportunity to introduce yourself in a style or setting that best conveys your interest and personality. This is a great chance to give the reviewers a "feel" for you, personality-wise. Save your video on YouTube or VIMEO; provide the sharable link in the application. Although optional, we advise you to take the time to do this. Don't make a "big production" out of it. They just want to feel your vibe. You can find many examples of Schwarzman introduction videos on YouTube. Watch several to see what you think works well and what doesn't. Then, record your own!

The Interview Process

Candidates invited for interview are notified in mid-October. The interview is an integral part of the Schwarzman Scholars selection process. It is typically conducted in person at one of three locations around the world. The interview will wrap up very promptly at 25 minutes.
