APhA Student Scholarships: Opportunities for Future Pharmacists and Public Health Professionals

Building meaningful partnerships toward better health is a top priority at APhA. This commitment is reflected in various initiatives, including student scholarship programs designed to support the next generation of leaders in pharmacy and public health. These scholarships recognize academic excellence, leadership, and dedication to community service, providing financial assistance to deserving students and fostering their professional development.

APhA Annual Meeting Student Scholarship Fund

The APhA Annual Meeting Student Scholarship Fund enables public health students to attend the APhA Annual Meeting, the world’s largest gathering of public health professionals. Students from any college or university are eligible to apply for the scholarships, which help cover meeting registration and travel expenses.

Since 2012, with generosity and support, APhA has raised more than $200,000 in support of the Annual Meeting Student Scholarship Fund and have awarded nearly 400 student scholarships. APHA thanks Lyndon Haviland, DrPH, MPH, who founded the student scholarship fund and continues to serve as its lead funder.

APhA Foundation Student Scholarship Program

The American Pharmacists Association Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the Student Scholarship Program. The Student Scholarship Program honors student pharmacists who dedicate their time to supporting and advancing their school's APhA-ASP Chapter while balancing the demands of a full-time pharmacy curriculum. This year, 28 exceptional student pharmacists were awarded scholarships in recognition of their strong academic performance and active involvement in both school and community initiatives.

Benjamin Bluml, RPh, APhA Foundation executive director and senior vice president of research and innovation, stated, "We are honored to celebrate this year's APhA Foundation Scholarship recipients for their exceptional academic accomplishments and leadership. I'd like to sincerely thank our generous supporters whose contributions have funded scholarships for over 20 years. These scholarships demonstrate our dedication to supporting the next generation of leaders through education, and we look forward to the meaningful impact they will have in the field."

Ronald L. Williams Memorial Fund Scholarships

The Ronald L. Williams Memorial Fund, administered by the APhA Foundation, provides two scholarships annually to student pharmacists attending the APhA Institute on Substance Use Disorders in Salt Lake City, Utah. Applications for the scholarships are due on February 8, at 11:59 pm PT.

As a member of the APhA Staff, Ron devoted his untiring attention to improving the health and careers of pharmacists who suffer from alcohol and drug dependencies. During his career, Williams was instrumental in the development of Pharmacist Recovery Programs (PRNs) that assist pharmacists and student pharmacists who have become impaired by dependence on alcohol and other drugs.

Student ambassadors play an integral role in the success of the APhA Institute on Substance Use Disorders by assisting APhA Staff with the planning, development, and implementation of the program. Applications for the ambassador program are due on Sunday, February 8, at 11:59 pm PT.

Each year, the APhA Foundation provides two scholarships for student pharmacists to attend the APhA Institute on Substance Use Disorders, and donations to the APhA Foundation Ronald L. Williams Memorial Fund are encouraged.

The University of Utah School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies (now known as the APhA Institute on Substance Use Disorders) was established in 1951 and throughout the years continually expanded its scope to keep pace with the increased awareness of the health and social problems of alcoholism and other drug dependencies. Upon recommendations from pharmacists and student pharmacists to the APhA House of Delegates in the early 1980s, APhA staff members Richard P. Penna and Ronald L. Williams developed the Pharmacy Section at The University of Utah School on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependencies in 1983.

In an effort to continue to provide this phenomenal experience, APhA launched the inaugural session of the APhA Institute on Alcoholism and Drug Dependencies. The institute assists individuals in finding treatment, supporting them in ongoing recovery, and facilitating re-entry into pharmacy practice or pharmacy education. Institute programming provides attendees with the latest methods and techniques for working effectively toward this purpose. The institute also strives to provide a perspective for those who would like to understand SUDs even if they have not experienced it themselves.

Additional Scholarship Opportunities

Beyond APhA-specific scholarships, student pharmacists can explore other avenues for financial aid. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) Foundation offers grants to qualified board of pharmacy members and staff to attend the APhA Institute on Substance Use Disorders.
