On the GRE you don't need to know the exact equation for standard deviation, at least not yet, so this shortcut should be sufficient. Let’s try the ASV method for Quantity A and Quantity B. The average of list A is 10, and the average of list B is 15, because the average of a list of consecutive, evenly spaced numbers is equal to the median of those numbers. Now, let’s add up the distances from the mean and divide by 5. Quantity A: (10+5+0+5+10) / 5 = 30/5 = 6. Quantity B: (10+5+0+5+10) = 30/5 = 6. Thus, the ASV of both lists are equal, so it is highly likely that their Standard Deviations are also equal. That's it. Yes, ASV is not the same thing as standard deviation.

Standard deviation is one of the most important and frequently used statistics we can find-whether used on its own to tell us something about a data set or as part of an equation to find percentile or other information.

When comparing datasets on the SAT or ACT, remember the definition we brought up earlier: if the datasets have a similar number of elements and symmetrical distributions, the dataset with values that deviate farther from the mean has the greater standard deviation. Often, the dataset with the greater range will also have a greater standard deviation.

Three traps appear in normal distribution questions. First, students assume all symmetric distributions are normal (a bimodal distribution can be symmetric but is not normal). Second, students confuse standard deviation with variance. Third, students apply the 68% rule incorrectly by assigning more than 50% of data to one side of the mean.
