Salem High School Alumni Association: A Century of Tradition and Support

Established in 1882, the Salem High School Alumni Association (SHSAA) has been a cornerstone of the Salem community, dedicated to sustaining friendships, preserving memories, and supporting the educational aspirations of Salem High School graduates. For over a century, the association has played an integral role in fostering connections among alumni and investing in the next generation of scholars.

A Legacy of Scholarship

One of the most significant contributions of the SHSAA has been its robust scholarship program. Through the generosity of alumni and friends, the association has awarded over 3,300 scholarships, totaling more than $9 million, to deserving students. These scholarships have been instrumental in helping students pursue their career aspirations and achieve outstanding accomplishments. In 2025 alone, the SHSAA awarded 116 scholarships totaling $405,500 to 49 students from the Class of 2025 and 52 post-secondary alumni. Since 1908, the association has proudly awarded over $10 million to Salem graduates.

Connecting Alumni and Preserving Memories

Beyond scholarships, the SHSAA is committed to fostering connections among alumni and preserving the rich history of Salem High School. The association achieves this through various initiatives, including:

  • Organizing class reunions: Reunions provide opportunities for alumni to reconnect with former classmates, reminisce about their high school experiences, and celebrate their shared history.
  • Alumni-sponsored events: The SHSAA hosts a variety of events throughout the year, providing platforms for alumni to network, socialize, and support the association's mission.
  • Publishing newsletters: The association keeps alumni informed about SHSAA news, upcoming events, and the accomplishments of fellow graduates through regular newsletters.
  • Preserving memorabilia: The SHSAA meticulously preserves memorabilia, ensuring that the memories and traditions of Salem High School are cherished for generations to come.

The "Quaker Success" Podcast: Highlighting Alumni Journeys

In recent years, the SHSAA has embraced new avenues for connecting with alumni and sharing their stories through the "Quaker Success" podcast. This podcast features interviews with Salem High School graduates from various fields, highlighting their experiences, accomplishments, and contributions to their communities.

Honoring Alumni and Preserving Traditions

The SHSAA also recognizes outstanding alumni who have made significant contributions to their professions, communities, or the world through its Honored Alumnus award. In 2025, Frank A. Zamarelli Jr. ('82), a local businessman and community advocate, was chosen as the Honored Alumnus. Zamarelli has been actively involved in various organizations, including the Rotary Club of Salem, the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Salem Community Theater. He also works with Salem City Schools as the SHS Auditorium Manager and serves as a sports announcer and scorekeeper.

The association is also dedicated to preserving traditions and enhancing school spirit, as demonstrated by the recent revival of the beloved Quaker Sam mascot.

Supporting the Future: Opportunities and Engagement

The Salem High School Alumni Association is actively seeking to expand its reach and impact. The association is currently seeking a part-time administrative assistant to support its operations.
