Navigating Rutgers University Tuition Payment Plans
Paying for college can be a significant undertaking. Rutgers University offers several options, including payment plans, to help students manage their tuition expenses. This article provides a detailed overview of Rutgers University's tuition payment plans and related payment policies.
Understanding Tuition and Billing
Tuition for the Summer Session is determined by the specific course a student is taking, regardless of their school within Rutgers. Rutgers utilizes a paperless billing system, requiring students to access their bills online. Students are expected to pay term bill charges on or before the first day of classes. Those that register on or after the first day of classes must pay the day of registration.
Payment Methods
Rutgers offers multiple payment methods for tuition bills:
- In-Person: Payments can be made in person at the Cashier’s Office located at 311 North Fifth St, Armitage Hall First Floor. Cash is only accepted in person at this location.
- Online: Payments can be made online using a credit card or an e-check. Electronic Checking Payment with e-check, an electronic withdrawal from your bank account, is the most secure and convenient way to pay your tuition and fees.
- Check: Checks should be made payable to Rutgers, The State University, and should include the student’s RUID and phone number on the check. The date on which the cashier receives the bill payment is the effective date of payment. Postmark dates will NOT be considered as payment dates. Returned checks incur a $50 late fee (note that is different than the standard $125 late fee) and a $10 return check fee.
- International Payments: Students who wish to pay their term bills by sending money from a non-US bank will need to log into their student accounts and utilize our partners Scholarship and PeerTransfer to complete the payment.
A non-refundable fee of 2.45% of the amount paid with the card will be assessed to Credit Card Payments.
Tuition Payment Plans (RUTPP)
Rutgers University offers Tuition Payment Plans (RUTPP) to students who cannot pay their full balance by the due date. Students who have an account balance and are unable to pay the full amount by the due date may enroll in a Tuition Payment Plan (RUTPP) or visit the Student Accounting/Campus Business Office for additional assistance. Payment plans for prior terms are not available. To sign up for a payment plan, visit paymybill.rutgers.edu and log into your online term bill (OTB). View the step-by-step sign up guide, how-to video, and plan adjustment guide.

Enrollment Fee: There is a $55 fee to enroll in RUTPP semester plans, assessed per semester, and a $65 fee to enroll in annual plans.
Payment Schedule: Rutgers-Camden does offer a variety of payment plan options for Summer. There is an enrollment fee of $50, and payments can be spread out from two to five payments.
Contact Information: Please contact the payment plan provider Nelnet Campus Commerce at 888-470-6014 and a representative will assist you.
Financial Aid and Student Loans
Financial aid availability for the Summer Session is limited and may be drawn from Fall or Spring awards or as part of a year-long package. Student Loans may be available - please contact Financial Aid for more information at 856-225-6039. It's important to note that receiving your award letter does NOT pay your bill - you must still submit the bill and designate the funds to pay the Summer Session balance. This does not automatically happen upon receiving the award notice.
Important Policies and Deadlines
- Students are expected to pay term bill charges on or before the first day of classes.
- Students who have not paid or made arrangements to pay by the stated date risk having their course registration cancelled.
- Refund Policy: To receive a full refund of tuition and the refundable portion of the Summer Session Student Fee (late fees are not refundable), students must cancel their registration either through the Webreg system or in writing prior to the Last Day to Drop classes. If the Webreg system is unable to withdraw you from the class, then the withdrawal must be performed in writing. It is the student’s responsibility to verify that the class has been deleted from their schedule. A 100% tuition refund is only available until the date indicated on the Calendar. On the first day of the course charges for the course will occur and a 100% refund will not be granted. After the Last Day to Drop, a “W” will appear on their transcript and the student will be refunded either 50% if they withdraw by that deadline or no refund after that deadline. Because of this it is strongly advised that the student contact the instructor with any questions regarding schedule, workload, or other issues before the course starts. No refund will be granted after those dates. Refunds are processed by the Student Accounting Office as a check and take approximately seven to ten business days.
- All account balances not paid in full by the due date are the sole responsibility of the student and extend to all costs incurred by the university to collect such debt.
