Eligibility for Recreation Employment
To be eligible for student employment within Rutgers Recreation, individuals must be currently enrolled at the University with full-time status, which is defined as a minimum of 12 credits for undergraduate students and 9 credits for graduate students.

- Aquatics Instructor: Providing competent and safe swimming instruction as established by the American Red Cross Learn to Swim program. This role involves planning and organizing class time effectively for maximum practice, preparing weekly lesson plans, and teaching with encouragement and positive reinforcement.
- Camp Counselor: Responsible for the safe and enjoyable participation of campers aged 5-14 years in all activities. Camp Counselors act as enthusiastic and positive role models while supporting instructors and administrative staff.
- Facility Assistant: Assisting with equipment and facility inspection and maintenance, including transportation and set up. Facility Assistants also assist with administrative tasks, including inputting data for inventory, work orders, and inspection tracking.
- Exercise is Medicine - On Campus (EIM-OC) Coach: The EIM-OC Coach will manage an appointment-based system that provides one-on-one exercise prescriptions. The Coach will represent the EIM-OC program, deliver presentations, and attend promotional events. The EIM-OC Coach must have a current personal training certification, a strong background in fitness, and be competent in providing exercise prescriptions. This position requires virtual and in-person work dictated by the current need of the program and typically involves 8-15 hours per week.
- Exercise is Medicine - On Campus Student Leader: EIM-OC Student Leaders serve during the academic year (September - May) as part of the EIM-OC leadership team, providing a minimum of 30 hours of service each semester. Student leaders will represent the program and its initiatives at university events and engage in relevant programming and promotional opportunities.
- Fitness & Wellness Class Instructor: Teaching, leading, and motivating participants through intentionally designed group fitness & wellness classes. CPR/AED and format-specific certifications are required.
- Intramural Official: Facilitating intramural sport contests. Intramural Officials uphold sport rules and enforce penalties to ensure sportsmanship and maximum enjoyment by all participants.
- Lifeguard: Maintaining constant surveillance of patrons in the facility and acting immediately and appropriately to secure their safety in the event of an emergency. Lifeguards provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services. American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required.
- Massage Therapist: Performing therapeutic massages of soft tissues and joints to provide health and wellness benefits. NJ Massage Therapy Licensing and CPR/AED and First Aid certifications are required.
- Office Assistant: Providing administrative support for facility, service, and/or programming area(s) within the department.
- Personal Trainer: Providing assessments and developing individualized exercise programs for clients. CPR/AED and personal training certifications are required.
- Recreation Assistant: Delivering superior front-line customer service to Recreation visitors and callers, managing facility access, equipment lending, sales, and disseminating information. Recreation Assistants supervise fitness centers, ensuring policy compliance, facility cleanliness, and exceptional patron support. Must be CPR/AED and First Aid certified, which is incorporated into our comprehensive training program.
- Rock Gym Belayer: Responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the College Ave. Gym rock wall in addition to ensuring a safe and comfortable climbing environment for our patrons. This position offers opportunities for formal certifications and teaching experience.
- Trip Leader: Providing leadership for the GO Outdoors program by ensuring a quality experience for all participants.
