Locations and History
Riverland Community College operates across three campuses in southeastern Minnesota: Albert Lea, Austin, and Owatonna. These campuses are strategically located along the I-90 and I-35 corridors.
The college's history is rich and multifaceted, originating from several educational institutions that eventually merged to form Riverland Community College.
- Austin Junior College: According to Academic Dean Ruben Meland’s document “Austin Junior College - Nine Years of Community Service”, Austin Junior College opened on September 3, 1940. In June 1966, the college moved its offices into a new administration wing and, at that time, its name was officially changed to Austin State Junior College.
- Austin Area Vocational-Technical School: According to “The Austin Area Vocational-Technical School was established in Austin, Minnesota as a part of the public school system in 1951. In February 1972, the school moved to new facilities.
- Albert Lea Technical College: According to “A Brief History of the MN AVTI System and Directors”, Albert Lea was tentatively approved by the State Board of Education on September 30, 1968. They received the final approval on November 4, 1968.”
- Owatonna College and University Center (OCUC): Riverland Community College has served the Owatonna area for the past 13 years, primarily in the area of customized training for business and industry. January 14, 2002 was the first day classes were held at Owatonna College and University Center. In April 2008, Gov. Tim Pawlenty signed into law a bonding bill that allowed the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system to acquire the Owatonna College & University Center. On December 31, 2008, MnSCU finalized the sale.
Minnesota Riverland Technical College, District #2501, was formed on July 1, 1991. Riverland Community College was established on July 1, 1996.
Academic Programs and Transfer Pathways
Riverland Community College offers a wide range of academic programs, including associate degrees in over 50 career programs, liberal arts and sciences, and transfer pathways. These programs are designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce or for continued education at a four-year university.

Transfer Agreements:
- Winona State University: Austin Public Schools, Riverland Community College, and Winona State University have collaborated to offer an Associate of Arts degree through Riverland and a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education through WSU, all without leaving the Austin community. Riverland is now offering the Nursing (RN Track) Dual Admission Program partnership with Winona State University and is intended for students pursuing an Associate's Degree in Nursing (ADN) intending to bridge to their Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
