From Columbia High to Richland High: A Historical Overview
Founded in 1910 as Columbia High School, the institution initially served the small farming community of Richland. As weapons production increased during the Cold War, the town grew, achieving first-class city status in 1958. In 1964, Columbia High School underwent significant renovations, followed by remodeling stages between 1995 and 2006. The school was renamed Richland High School in 1982, solidifying its identity within the Richland School District.
The Bomber Mascot: A Symbol of History
Richland's mascot, the "Bomber," pays homage to the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, built in Seattle, and recognizes the city's role as an "Atomic City" during World War II. Hanford, a key site in the Manhattan Project, housed the B Reactor, the world's first full-scale plutonium production reactor. The plutonium produced there was used in the nuclear bomb detonated over Nagasaki, Japan. In 2019, Richland High School introduced "Archie," a B-17 Ball Turret Gunner, as its first character mascot.
