Undergraduate Programs: Building a Foundation for Success

Arts and Sciences

American Studies Program: Examine the American experience through various lenses, including art, literature, history, culture, politics, and social movements. This flexible program is ideal for students interested in multiple aspects of the humanities, such as English, history, black studies, political science, sociology, public and community service, and business.
Anthropology: Study human societies and cultures from a broad perspective, ranging from local communities to global issues. With an emphasis on qualitative/ethnographic research methods, students will develop the skills necessary to conduct individual ethnographic fieldwork projects. Anthropology is an excellent companion to any major or field of study.
Asian and Asian American Studies: Explore special topics within the disciplines of art history, economics, English, history, political science, philosophy, and sociology through this interdisciplinary minor program.
Biochemistry: Combine chemistry courses with selected courses in biology and biochemistry, preparing students for medical and dental school, as well as graduate school in biochemistry or molecular biology.
Biology: Gain an understanding of the structure, function, and evolution of life at the cellular, organismic, and population levels through lecture, formal laboratories, and experiential education (e.g., research and internship).
Black Studies: The program offers a strong grounding in the African-American community’s past and present.
Catholic Studies: An interdisciplinary education animated by the Catholic intellectual tradition that combines theology, philosophy, literature, history, the arts, and more.
Chemistry: A foundational scientific discipline that is critical to solving many of the world’s most pressing problems. Providence College provides students with the tools to satisfy their natural curiosity about the world and explore wherever their interests lead them.
Classics: Approach the wellspring of Western thinking through a range of courses and interests - archaeology, art, art history, history, language, literature, philosophy, religious studies, and theology. Students will take at least four courses in ancient Greek and/or Latin and two electives offered through the History and Classics Department. Studying the wellspring of Western thinking gives them a wider perspective and deeper understanding of the problems and opportunities that confront modern society.
Computer Science: Provides students with the knowledge of networks, databases, operating and numerical methods of solving problems, as well as the mathematics that form the base of the field. The program incorporates rigorous practice in solving problems using algorithms and teaches students how to implement solutions using high-level programming languages.
Creative Writing: Offers a rich mix of creative writing and literature courses that provides students the rare opportunity to complement their creative writing skills with the exciting addition of literature courses that arc from Chaucer to contemporary fiction and poetry.
Dance: The minor is designed to give students a foundation in dance technique, composition, history, and criticism.
Music: Bachelor of Arts in Music, Music Education, Music Technology & Production, and Musical Theatre, Music Track. All students intending to major in Music, Music Education, Music Technology and Production, or Musical Theater, Music Track are required to audition and be interviewed by members of the music faculty.
- Music Education: A balance between the liberal arts program of the College and the requirements for both the music and education departments for the certification process in music education. Combined with required field experiences and 12 credits of student teaching, music education candidates will have an understanding of past and current methodologies and research in the field of music education.
- Music Technology and Production: A specialized major where you will learn how to produce professional-quality music, as well as gain hands-on experience using music hardware and software technology, all while acquiring an understanding of the music industry.
- Musical Theatre: The Musical Theatre Concentration aims to develop the student’s talent and ability with the goal of helping the students discover their own unique abilities in musical theatre. A successful professional in musical theatre must possess strong technical skills in acting, voice, music and dance with the ability to integrate these skills with ease, expressiveness and versatility. As such this concentration requires coursework in music, acting, and dance combined with many performance opportunities. In order to concentrate in Musical Theatre, students must elect either a music or theatre major.
- Liturgical Music: The major is inherently a portrayal of interdisciplinarity drawing from both theology and music.
Studio Art: The program stresses a strong foundation in the fine arts, as well as the liberal arts, on which to build careers in the arts, communication, advertising, and related fields. The student is also prepared for graduate study leading to an M.F.A. in studio art or M.A.T. in art education.

Business

Business and Innovation Minor: This minor combines the best of a liberal arts education with contemporary courses in business, giving non-business majors a fundamental toolkit of valuable business skills, including entrepreneurship and innovation. Interdisciplinary in nature, the Business and Innovation minor offers foundational courses in accountancy, computer science, and art.
