Benefits of a Postgraduate Diploma
A postgraduate diploma can be a strategic investment for various reasons:
- Career Advancement: Many individuals pursue a postgraduate diploma to deepen their professional expertise and advance in their current careers. A certificate is ideal for people attempting to move up in their current field.
- Skill Development: These programs equip students with specialized, in-demand skills relevant to their chosen field.
- Career Change: A postgraduate diploma can facilitate a career transition by providing the necessary knowledge and credentials for a new profession.
- Preparation for Further Studies: Earning a graduate certificate can be a great first step toward earning a master’s degree. At Harvard Extension School, 44% of certificate earners choose this route, affording them the benefits of both credentials. Most certificates stack toward at least one Master of Liberal Arts (ALM) degree.
- Increased Responsibilities and Promotion: In a survey of 1,000 students who had just completed their certificate program, 42 percent said they took on more responsibilities at work, received a promotion, or changed careers while pursuing the credential.
Program Structure and Duration
The structure and duration of postgraduate diploma programs can vary depending on the institution and the specific field of study.
- Course Load: Most graduate certificates are just four courses. You can finish in one year by taking two courses each semester. Or, set a more flexible pace and take up to three years to complete.
- Part-time Options: The courses can be completed on a part-time basis, allowing many to continue working full time. Most students (78 percent) are working full time while pursuing a certificate. The average age is 36. Fifty-three percent of certificate students have a master’s, PhD, or other advanced degree.
- Credit Hours: The post-baccalaureate diploma requires a minimum of 36 semester hours. The graduate certificate programs, ranging from 12 to 21 credit hours, are designed to allow students to take courses in an area of specialization, enhancing their academic and professional experience.
Admission Requirements
Admission to a postgraduate diploma program typically requires an undergraduate degree or equivalent. At Curtis, all undergraduate students who have been accepted into the Bachelor of Music program must submit the most current official transcript of high school and (if applicable) college academic work, as well as standardized test results (Please note: Submitting SAT scores is optional). Post-Baccalaureate Certificate Programs
Post-baccalaureate programs offer a unique opportunity for targeted study to advance your career or prepare for graduate or professional school. Many students use post-baccalaureate programs to strengthen their academic transcript, show recent academic success and secure current letters of recommendation from Northwestern faculty. Many post-bacc programs can be customized to accommodate a student’s individual interests and experience. A post-bacc program is an academic program designed to help students who have already completed their undergraduate degree bolster their credentials for professional and academic success. A post-bacc certificate and course credit from Northwestern enables students to demonstrate their professional expertise and strengthen their applications to graduate programs. While these programs are commonly aimed at students applying to medical school, SPS also offers post-baccalaureate programs in subjects such as accounting , business, and marketing. There are two primary reasons a student may choose to apply to a post-baccalaureate program. First, as a means of advancing their career-whether you’re looking to change professions or simply grow skills for your current role, post-bacc program courses help you build relevant credentials and accelerate your path to the position you want. The second reason a student might apply to a post-baccalaureate certificate program is to prepare for an advanced degree. Not only does strong performance in post-bacc courses make you a more competitive candidate for medical school and graduate and PhD programs, the connections forged with faculty and other students during the program provide valuable networking opportunities. The amount of time that it takes to complete a post-bacc certificate or program depends on the number of courses that make up the program and the course load taken per quarter. Many non-premed post-baccalaureate programs require just four courses, meaning that they can be completed on a part-time basis in just a year. Aside from improving students’ qualifications in important pre-requisite topics, a post-baccalaureate premedical program is also an opportunity to forge valuable connections with faculty and gain practical experience required for medical school applications . Northwestern also offers linkage programs with three elite medical schools: Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. Students admitted to one of these three schools are invited to enroll directly after finishing the post-baccalaureate premedical program, allowing them to skip the traditional gap year. Post-baccalaureate program courses are available both in-person at Northwestern’s Chicago and Evanston campuses and online. Some post-bacc programs may only be available in one medium.

Northwestern University SPS
The graduate certificate programs, ranging from 12 to 21 credit hours, are designed to allow students to take courses in an area of specialization, enhancing their academic and professional experience. Students may work towards a graduate certificate in addition to pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree or students may enroll in stand-alone graduate certificate programs for the purpose of personal and professional development. Note: Students completing an undergraduate degree may not enter a graduate certificate program unless they are admitted as a degree-seeking graduate student or post-baccalaureate non-degree student. We organize 8 starting dates per year. Our academic calendar is based on a quarter system with four 10-week quarters per year that consist of two 5-week terms each. We refer to these quarters as Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer, and to these terms simply as A and B. You can complete the program in a full-time format within 1 academic year of 9 to 12 months. Alternatively, you can complete the program in a part-time format within up to 3 academic years, depending on our course planning and your course selection. Completing half of the typical workload of a full-time format will equal twice the typical duration. We schedule most courses on weekdays throughout the day, typically in blocks of 3 hours between 8.30 and 18.30, but there may be several evening courses between 19.00 and 22.00, weekend courses on Saturdays, and/or seminar courses with visiting faculty in two or more consecutive days. Some courses may be scheduled in a hybrid format, partially on-campus and partially virtual, or in a fully virtual format. We work with a rolling admissions process and do not set specific deadlines to apply because of our multiple starting dates. Applications are welcomed and reviewed on a rolling basis. We do advise students to apply early and formally accept their application so that everyone can plan ahead. We also advise students to allow sufficient time from the moment of their formal acceptance to plan their stay abroad (where applicable). While our programs prepare students for a wide range of professions across a wide range of industries, it is important to note that our programs do not aim for access to regulated professions or government employment. We believe in personal attention from the start. Our team members are available to answer your questions and support you with your application.
