Portland State University (PSU) Overview

Portland State University (PSU) is a public research university located in the University District of Portland, Oregon. Established in 1946 as a post-secondary collegiate system for World War II veterans, PSU has grown into a comprehensive institution offering undergraduate degrees in 123 fields and postgraduate degrees in 117 areas. As Oregon's only state university located in a large city, PSU is governed by a board of trustees and is classified as an R2 Doctoral University with high research activity. The campus houses approximately 3,000 students in ten residence halls. The Vikings have achieved significant athletic success, winning NCAA National Division II championships in women's volleyball and wrestling. The football team has also reached the Division II level finals twice. For more information, visit www.pdx.edu.

Purchasing Guidelines for University Departments and Student Groups

University departments and student groups at PSU are required to purchase PSU trademarked merchandise from a licensed vendor. This ensures that all merchandise meets the university's standards and protects its brand identity. For licensing and trademarking matters, PSU collaborates with CLC (Collegiate Licensing Company), which is part of IMG College Licensing (IMGCL). CLC maintains the official logo art sheets. Merchandise intended for non-resale promotional purposes can be sourced from any licensed vendor. However, merchandise sold for profit must be ordered from a vendor holding a Retail license. The licensed vendor can add the “TM” and “R” designations to the design if needed.

The Merchandise Ordering Process

To ensure brand consistency and quality, PSU has a specific process for ordering branded promotional items:

  1. Finding a Manufacturer and Obtaining Bids: The department or student group identifies a manufacturer and requests bids for the desired branded items.
  2. Selecting the Promotional Item and Bid: The department or student group chooses the promotional item and bid that best meet their needs.
  3. Submitting the Art File: The art file is sent to the manufacturer either directly by the department or student group or through CLC’s “Logos on Demand” service.
  4. Proof Creation and Approval: The manufacturer creates a proof of the item and sends it to the department or student group for approval.
  5. CLC Approval Queue: After the department or student group approves the proof, the manufacturer submits it to the CLC approval queue.
  6. PSU UCOMM Review: PSU's University Communications (UCOMM) reviews the item in the queue. If the design complies with PSU’s brand identity standards, it is approved. If the item does not meet the standards, PSU UCOMM disapproves it, UCOMM reaches out to the department or student group to work on a solution to bring the item within identity standards Once the solution has been implemented, the manufacturer sends another proof for department or student group approval.
  7. Production: Once approved by PSU UCOMM, the manufacturer is notified and can proceed with production.

Design Standards and Flexibility

Designs for items intended for retail sale must adhere to high standards. Standard PSU logos cannot be modified, and the “TM” and “R” designations must be applied when using them. However, to accommodate changing customer preferences, fonts can be altered, and ink and fabric color choices are not restricted to the PSU color palette.

For promotional items not intended for retail sale, there is more flexibility in the design. Fonts and logo designs can deviate from the standard PSU logo and fonts, provided they still meet PSU identity standards. Similarly, ink and fabric color choices are not limited to the PSU color palette.
