Essential Physical Education Equipment: A Top 10 Guide

Top 10 lists are attention-grabbing, providing quick and easily digestible information. This article provides a list of must-have equipment for primary physical education. This list shares what has been helpful to me and my colleagues who share more than 70 years of combined experience.

1. Swim Noodles

Whether full size, cut in half, or sliced into small pieces, swim noodles can be used regularly. A quick search on the internet will yield countless tag games, team-building activities, and competitive challenges. They can be found at a low price.

2. Jump Ropes

Like riding a bike, every child should be able to jump rope. The jump rope is a dynamic piece of exercise equipment. It’s small enough to fit into a backpack, improves coordination, enhances cardiovascular fitness while strengthening muscles, and is fun!

3. Gator Skin Balls

Gator Skin balls are practical, durable, and safe. They come in a variety of sizes and styles. Six-inch Gator Skin Softi Balls are used for throwing and catching drills, team handball, rolling challenges and drills, lead-up games for baseball (gator ball), and Ultimate catch.

4. Foam Activity Pins (Foam Cylinders)

Foam activity pins, or foam cylinders, are safe, easy to store, and useful. They are commonly used as targets and goals in rolling, throwing, and kicking activities.

5. Bean Bags and Scarves

These are excellent implements for younger and older students to practice their tossing, catching, sliding, and rolling skills. Kindergarten through second grades, in particular, can practice tossing and catching with a partner confidently, without fear of getting bonked by a heavier, traditional ball. Soft pliable canvas bean bags filled with plastic pellets. Size: 4". Each set of 12 includes 2 each of six colors.

6. Scooter Boards

Scooter boards make many appearances throughout the year. Early on, they are used during cooperative lessons. Later, they are used for a variety of tag and invasion games like scooter soccer, scooter handball, and ultimate bucketball. Scooters have become a main fitness tool.

7. Plastic Scoops

There are numerous practical uses for plastic scoops. Ways can be discovered to sprinkle in the scoops throughout the PE curriculum.

8. Hula Hoops

Placing a stack of hula hoops out for a station during one of your PE classes and giving the students simple instructions such as, “How many ways can you and your group use the hula hoops?” will result in jumping, spinning, building, and overall creativity. The versatility of a hoop is limitless. Students have used them as targets, bases, steering wheels, goals, obstacles, and agility patterns. 24 and 30 inch hoops designed to teach grace and rhythm in dance and gymnastic classes. A screen and projector are great for visual learners, the screen allows us to project daily lessons, directions to an activity, timers, scoreboards, rubrics, and expectations. It works wonders for instant activities!

10. Cones

Cones of all colors, shapes, and sizes are primarily used to make boundaries, cones can also serve as batting tees, megaphones, targets, and hurdles. Agility and Coordination

Team Building and Cooperative Play

  • Sack Race Sacks: The sack race or gunny sack race is a competitive game in which participants place both of their legs inside a sack or pillow case that reaches their waist or neck and jump forward from a starting point toward a finish line. The first person to cross the finish line is the winner of the race. Great fun for students, individuals, schools, camps or church outings.
