From Football Field to Television Screen: The Education and Career of Dr. Phil McGraw

Dr. Phil McGraw is a well-known American television personality, psychologist, and author. Born Phillip Calvin McGraw in Vinita, Oklahoma, on September 1, 1950, he has overcome numerous challenges to achieve his current status as one of the top-paid TV show hosts in America, with multiple award nominations.

Early Life and Education

Phillip Calvin McGraw was the only male child of Anne Geraldine "Jerry" (née Stevens) and Joseph J. McGraw Jr. He has two older sisters, Deana and Donna, and a younger sister, Brenda. His father initially worked on an oil rig in North Texas, but he later pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a psychologist, which McGraw said was when he first became interested in psychology. The family moved to Kansas so his father could achieve his dream, uprooting his family so he could pursue a doctorate in psychology.

McGraw attended Shawnee Mission North High School in Overland Park, Kansas, where he played linebacker on the football team. In 1968, he earned a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa. However, an injury during one of his games prevented him from continuing his football career. He later transferred to Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he graduated in 1975 with a B.A. in psychology.

McGraw continued his education, earning an M.A. in experimental psychology in 1976 and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology in 1979, both from North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas). His dissertation was titled "Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Psychological Intervention." He also completed a year of post-doctoral training in forensic psychology at the Wilmington Institute. Frank Lawlis, his doctoral advisor, later became the primary contributing psychologist for the Dr. Phil show.

Early Career Ventures

In 1971, McGraw lived in Topeka, Kansas, where he and his father and two friends ran the Grecian Health Spa. The business closed, and McGraw filed for bankruptcy in September 1973, moving out of state. The state's Attorney General office investigated McGraw and his business partners after McGraw sold lifetime membership contracts to another company, leaving customers legally responsible for the membership even though the spa was closed. Lead investigator Emory Goad said "McGraw had been pulling off a textbook example of a membership scam. He was signing up hundreds of customers to long, expensive contracts, then turning around and selling the contracts to a financial institution for a percentage of the total value up front in cash. He then simply shut down the spa at some point after collecting that money and left town.

McGraw entered private practice with his father after completing his education. However, he soon realized he "did not have the patience for the subtleties and ambiguous time frames of traditional talk therapy". In 1989, he founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc. (CSI) with lawyer Gary Dobbs. This trial consulting firm assisted trial lawyers in building cases through mock trials, behavioral analysis, jury selection, and mediation.

Rise to Fame

McGraw's career took a significant turn when he met Oprah Winfrey through Courtroom Sciences. In 1995, Winfrey hired CSI to prepare her for the Amarillo Texas beef trial, in which she was sued for defamation by cattlemen who claimed she defamed the beef industry. Winfrey was impressed with McGraw's assistance, thanking him for her victory in the case, which ended in 1998. Soon after, she invited him to appear on her show.

McGraw became a regular expert on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," dealing with life strategies and relationships. He became known for his "tell-it-like-it-is" style.

"Dr. Phil"

In September 2002, McGraw launched his own syndicated daily television show, "Dr. Phil," produced by Winfrey's Harpo Studios. The one-hour talk show quickly became a hit, tackling a different topic each show and offering advice to guests. "Dr. Phil" garnered the highest ratings of any new syndicated program since the launch of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" 16 years earlier and went on to pick up more than two dozen Emmy nominations.

The show features McGraw counseling guests with his blunt but caring personality, addressing issues such as money, obesity, spoiled children, and disgruntled spouses.

Other Television Ventures

In 2006, the "Dr. Phil House" (similar to CBS's "Big Brother") began airing as part of the "Dr. Phil" television show. In September 2007, Stage 29 launched "Decision House." Late in 2007, McGraw began promoting "The Doctors," a "Dr. Phil Show" spinoff series. The show, which first aired in September 2008 and ended in August 2022, was hosted by television personality and ER physician Travis Stork; Jay McGraw was executive producer of the show. In August 2021, the reality television series "House Calls with Dr. Phil" aired on CBS, in which McGraw visited various families at home and offered advice on their home life. The series ended after six episodes in September 2021. In November 2023, McGraw announced Merit Street Media, a new Fort Worth-based media company and television network he planned to launch in 2024. The network would be devoted primarily to news and true crime programming and be anchored by "Dr. Phil Primetime"-a successor to the syndicated "Dr. Phil" show.

Criticism and Controversies

McGraw's advice and methods have faced criticism from fellow psychotherapists and non-experts. He frequently advises individuals to seek professional help, particularly psychotherapy. A 2016 study at The Ohio State University found that viewers were more likely to seek professional mental health care for themselves and their children after seeing McGraw deal with similar issues on the "Dr. Phil" show.

In 2003, McGraw lent his name and image to a line of nutritional supplements under the brand name Shape Up, under a licensing agreement with CSA Nutraceuticals.

Another contentious case arose in January 2008, when McGraw visited pop star Britney Spears in her hospital room. The visit drew criticism from the Spears family and mental health professionals, as it appeared to be part of an attempt at getting Spears and her parents to participate in an "intervention" on the "Dr. Phil" television show. Immediately after the visit, McGraw issued public statements about Spears' situation that the Spears' family spokeswoman Lou Taylor said violated their family's trust in McGraw.

McGraw was criticized for an interview featuring actress Shelley Duvall, which aired in 2016. In February 2022, around a dozen current and former employees of "Dr. Phil" alleged that the show fostered a toxic work environment.

In 2022, McGraw, Viacom, and CBS were sued by Bregoli and Hannah Archuleta, another former guest, for recommending their parents send them to Turn-About Ranch. Afterward, McGraw stopped recommending Turn-About Ranch on "Dr. Phil."
