MTA officials confirmed they are looking into more durable materials for student OMNY passes.
Virtual Student OMNY Cards
A program piloting virtual student OMNY cards will launch in the fall. Students will soon have the option to link their OMNY cards to a device so they will no longer need to carry a physical card, Parker-Moore said. But before rolling the program out citywide, the Education Department plans to pilot it. Officials declined to provide more details on the scope of the pilot. Students who don’t have devices will still be able to get physical cards. Those with devices will have to choose whether they want an actual card or one linked to their device.
Expanded Eligibility
The number of students eligible for OMNY cards might expand. There is consideration to extend eligibility to students who live closer to their school and students with disabilities who ride yellow school buses.For students without OMNY cards who need transit for school-approved programs, their school can request “special program OMNY cards,” which offer two trips and two transfers per day.

Use a smart phone (with mobile wallet enabled), a wearable, or a contactless credit or debit card, or an OMNY card to pay your fare at subway turnstiles, AutoGates, and onboard buses (including Select Bus Service). OMNY cards are available at many retail locations throughout the region and at OMNY vending machines in subway stations.
Reduced-Fare OMNY Card
It's easy to use: Simply tap your Reduced-Fare OMNY Card, credit or debit card, or mobile device on the screen at a subway turnstile or on the bus. If you already have a Reduced-Fare OMNY Card, you must tap that card to receive your Reduced-Fare benefit. Contact or visit us to switch your Reduced-Fare benefit to a different card or device, or to switch to using a Reduced-Fare OMNY Card instead. You must load money on your Reduced-Fare OMNY Card before you can use it. You can easily load money using cash, credit, or debit. You can check your card balance by tapping your card at an OMNY vending machine. If your Reduced-Fare OMNY Card is lost or stolen, you must visit a customer service location to report it and get a replacement. You can suspend a lost or stolen card immediately if it is linked to an OMNY account by logging in to your account.
Access-A-Ride OMNY ID card
If you are an Access-A-Ride customer, over the next few months you'll receive a new AAR OMNY ID card that will replace your current AAR ID and AAR MetroCard.
