Understanding NYU Steinhardt Tuition and Fees

Financing higher education is a significant consideration for prospective students. This article provides a detailed overview of tuition, fees, and financial aid opportunities at NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Understanding the cost structure and available resources is crucial for planning your investment in education.

Tuition Structure

NYU Steinhardt's tuition is assessed each term based on the number of credits a student enrolls in. As a graduate student, your educational expenses are based on the number of credits (also known as "points") for which you register, as well as registration/student service fees. A moderate increase in tuition and registration/service fees is to be expected each academic year. The Board of Trustees of New York University reserves the right to alter the schedule of fees without notice.

For instance, the estimated tuition per credit for the 2025-2026 academic year was $2,272. Summer 2026 cost per credit is $2,272. Fall 2026, Spring 2027, and Summer 2027 cost per credit is estimated to be $2,363.

Registration and Service Fees

In addition to tuition, students must also pay registration and service fees, which are calculated per term. These fees contribute to student services and resources.

For the 2025-2026 academic year, the registration/service fee was $572 for the first credit and $79 for each additional credit per term/semester.

Additional Considerations

  • January Term (J-Term) courses: These courses are not assessed registration/service fees.
  • Online Classes in India: Students physically based in India and taking online classes may be subject to India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) and are responsible for payment. India’s GST tax is an 18% tax on the cost of the online class.

Other Program Costs

Students in the MS program in Communicative Sciences and Disorders can expect to pay approximately $109,056 in tuition for the 48 graduate-level credits. Please note that this cost does not include foundation courses (this could range from 2-14 credits), which students may need to take in addition to the 48 graduate-level credits.

Financial Aid and Scholarship Opportunities

NYU Steinhardt offers various financial aid options to help students finance their education. Financing your education is an investment in your future, and we’re here to help guide you through the process. The majority of our students fund their teacher residency experience through a combination of scholarships, financial aid, and loans, as well as financial resources earned through their teacher residency.

Scholarships

  • Merit-based scholarships: One hundred percent of this year’s enrolled cohort received an NYU Steinhardt scholarship. By applying to the NYU Teacher Residency, you will be considered for scholarships that range from $8,000 to $20,000. No separate application for scholarships is necessary.
  • Need-based scholarships, financial aid: Most graduate students are eligible to receive up to $41,000 in federal loans over the course of their teacher residency.

Federal Student Loans

US citizens and eligible noncitizens admitted to and enrolled at least half-time (six semester credits) in a graduate program are eligible for Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans and Federal Direct PLUS Loans that can assist in paying for school. To apply for student loans, you must be admitted to a graduate program and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) (New York University, code number 002785).

  • Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loans: Of up to $20,500 may be awarded for every two consecutive semesters of enrollment to assist with educational expenses. Payment of the principal (not the interest) is deferred while the student is enrolled at least half-time (six credits).
  • Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan: This credit-based loan is a supplement to the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan. Interest is charged during all periods. The US Department of Education will evaluate the borrower’s credit history to determine eligibility.

District and Charter Scholarships, Stipends, Wages, and Benefits

Applicable only to full-day residency programs, these opportunities can significantly offset academic and living expenses. Our partners are responsible for a tuition scholarship (or subsidy) as part of your commitment to them in the full-day residency. You will also earn $25,000 - $50,000 to help offset academic and living expenses. Financial support from our district and charter partners will vary; explore our residency partner locations to learn more about the stipends, wages, and other benefits where full-day residencies are available.

Service Grants, Awards, and Loan Forgiveness

There are a number of additional resources available at the federal, state, and local levels for current students and postgraduate professionals, including:

  • TEACH Grant (federal): Students who are committed to teaching a high-need (Title 1) school for four years post-graduation may be eligible for a grant of up to $4,000. This is awarded during their residency year.
  • Teachers of Tomorrow (NY State): New York teachers in their second through fifth years of their teaching career may be eligible for an annual award.
  • Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program (federal): Teachers may be eligible to receive up to $17,500 in loan forgiveness after five years teaching in a Title 1 school.

How to Apply for Financial Aid

In order to apply for financial aid from NYU, you must complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Submit this form as soon as possible after October 1, and indicate that your data is to be sent to New York University, code number 002785. You must submit a FAFSA each year to determine and renew your financial aid. Apply early - applying after the deadline will delay the processing of federal aid and student loans. We strongly encourage the use of the FAFSA Data Retrieval Tool whenever possible.

Regardless of your financial situation, we encourage you to submit your FAFSA application as soon as you have applied to the teacher residency program. Do not wait until you receive an admissions decision, as it may result in delays in your financial aid package or result in loss of scholarship eligibility.

Understanding Out-of-Pocket Costs

As you consider your investment in the teacher residency program, we encourage you to factor in resources available to offset the cost of tuition and fees.
