New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine: An Overview

The New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) is dedicated to training osteopathic physicians for a lifetime of learning and practice, based upon the integration of evidence-based knowledge, critical thinking, and the tenets of osteopathic principles and practice. History and Accreditation

New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine traces its roots to W. Kenneth Riland, DO, and a group of visionary osteopathic physicians practicing in the State of New York. Dr. Riland was the personal physician to former President Richard Nixon, Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Dr. Riland and his colleagues saw the establishment of the medical school as a way to promote and strengthen the credibility of osteopathic medicine and leveraged the support of Rockefeller and other political leaders to establish the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1977. The college opened in 1977 as the first osteopathic medical school in the state of New York, offering the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree (D.O.). The inaugural class of 34 students graduated on June 11, 1981.

The college was established through the efforts of W. Kenneth Riland, an osteopathic physician (D.O.), and New York State Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller and members of the Rockefeller family. The college was granted accreditation by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and was chartered under New York State law through the efforts of Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller. To honor the efforts and contributions of Governor Rockefeller, the Nelson A. Rockefeller Academic Center was established.

NYITCOM is accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). The AOA Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) serves the public by establishing, maintaining, and applying accreditation standards and procedures to ensure that academic quality and continuous quality improvement delivered by the colleges of osteopathic medicine reflect the evolving practice of osteopathic medicine. NYITCOM most recently received a seven-year accreditation from the COCA. NYITCOM is also accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as an Institutional Sponsor and is approved to sponsor residencies and fellowships. The College of Osteopathic Medicine is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE).

Campuses and Facilities

The New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYITCOM) has two campuses:

Long Island (Old Westbury, NY): Students find a wide variety of housing options in the nearby residential communities.
Jonesboro, Arkansas (NYITCOM-Arkansas): New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine’s location on the Jonesboro campus of Arkansas State University (NYITCOM-Arkansas) is more than a medical school. Historic Wilson Hall is home to NYITCOM-Arkansas on the campus of Arkansas State University. The 1931 Art Deco building underwent a \$12.6 million modernization to create an 86,000 square-foot state-of-the-art medical facility. The renovation included laboratories and specialized teaching spaces such as the simulation emergency room, operating room, clinical learning rooms, and the gross anatomy lab. NYITCOM students have access to on-campus housing, the A-State Red WOLF fitness center, and convenient dining and refreshment options, including a full-service Starbucks just steps from NYITCOM’s Wilson Hall.

Both campuses have advanced medical/training facilities which house state-of-the-art osteopathic medical laboratories, smart auditoriums that are fully equipped with cutting-edge presentation and recording equipment, and a specialized Institute for Clinical Competence (ICC), which incorporates standardized patients and human patient simulation robots.

We provide a continuum of educational experiences to NYITCOM students, extending through the clinical and post-graduate years of training.

NYITCOM-Arkansas is dedicated to improving access to healthcare for the underserved and rural populations in Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta Region. Arkansas ranks 48th in overall population health status due to low health indicators including obesity and the number of adults who smoke. The state also ranks 46th in the number of active physicians per capita, and 39th in the number of primary care physicians.

Programs Offered

NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine offers five dual/concurrent degree programs: BS/DO, DO/MBA, DO/MPH, DO/MS in Academic Medicine and DO/PhD in Medical and Biological Sciences.

BS/DO: Seven-year BS/DO programs available with several colleges. Qualifying high school students can apply to the combined seven-year BS/DO students through NYIT as well as SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Geneseo, and SUNY Old Westbury.
DO/MBA: New York Tech’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) is fully online.

DO/MPH: New York Tech’s Master of Public Health (MPH) degree program is fully online. Upon completion, students will be prepared to take on exciting roles in the field of public health anywhere in the world and interpret healthcare policies, legal precedents, statutes and regulations.
DO/MS in Academic Medicine (Academic Scholars Program): DO/MS in Academic Medicine is designed to prepare medical students to pursue careers in academic medicine including medical education, research and clinical practice. This five-year program allows students to receive the DO and MS degrees concurrently. An academic scholarship is awarded for the last three years of the program. In the five-year D.O. / Academic Medicine M.S. program, you’ll master osteopathic principles, advanced biostatistics, and epidemiology. Students can also apply for the Academic Medicine Scholars Program, in which they earn an additional Master of Science in Academic Medicine.
DO/PhD: The combined Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Medical and Biological Sciences is a highly competitive seven-year program designed to develop well-trained osteopathic physician-scientists who will, through their research, drive the practice of medicine into the future.

The college provides the opportunity to obtain medical training in the United States for physicians educated outside of the United States through its Émigré Physicians Program (EPP). After completion of the 4-year EPP program, graduates receive the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree and are able to apply to DO and MD residency match programs as American graduates.

The college provides its alumni and other osteopathic medical graduates with residency and internship training opportunities through the New York Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Educational Consortium (NYCOMEC).

NYITCOM-Arkansas Specific Programs

In addition to a medical degree, every graduate from NYITCOM-Arkansas earns a Certificate in Population Health. Students also have the opportunity to gain valuable clinical training in a future mobile medical clinic known as the Delta Care-a-van.

Health Professions Pathway

NYITCOMHealth Professions Pathway New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine recognizes that terminally prepared health care professionals from fields including Physician Assistant; Physical Therapist; Occupational Therapist; Pharmacist and Chiropractic undergo rigorous didactic medically oriented curriculum, as well as significant clinical rotations and field work to obtain the entry-level registration for their professions. Some of these outstanding practitioners express an aspiration to continue on to medical school, citing the desire to practice independently, the need for professional growth and development, the need for increased medical knowledge and the ability to do more for their patients as reasons to do so.The NYITCOM Health Professionals Pathway (HPP) was created to provide an enhanced, holistic approach focused specifically on non-traditional applicants from these professional backgrounds. NYITCOM offers 5 slots at the Jonesboro, Arkansas location for applicants from the Health Professions Pathway application track.

Application Requirements for Health Professions Pathway

Applicants to the Health Professions Pathway track must:

Be a certified, terminally prepared Physician Assistant, Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Pharmacist, or Chiropractor.
Have a minimum cumulative overall GPA of 3.5 and a cumulative overall Science GPA of 3.3
Have completed all required prerequisite course for the D.O. program including:
- Biology, including a basic course in general biology or zoology (lecture and lab): 8 semester hours
- General Chemistry (lecture and lab): 8 semester hours
- Organic Chemistry I (lecture and lab): 4 semester hours
- Organic Chemistry II (lecture and lab): 4 semester hours. *Biochemistry, with or without lab, may be substituted for Organic Chemistry II.
- Physics (lecture and lab): 8 semester hours
Be US Citizens or Permanent Residents of the US
Have completed 3 years of full-time work experience in their profession
Submit at least 3 letters of recommendation from a supervisor in long-term work, service, research, or clinical experience.

Curriculum

NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine has a systems-based curriculum where students study select organ systems each semester for their first and second years. Pre-clerkship students take longitudinal OMM, case-based learning, and clinical skills courses that last the duration of the first and second years. Students typically take COMLEX Level 1 the summer of their second year before starting the clerkship phase of their medical education. Many students also elect to take USMLE Step 1 during same summer to increase their competitiveness for residency programs dominated by allopathic medical graduates.

Third year medical students at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine are required to rotate through Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, OBGYN, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery. To complete your medical school training, you’ll spend the final two years of this sequence in diverse, immersive patient care settings. The majority of third- and fourth-year rotations will occur in community hospitals, including NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital and St.

Admissions

Successful candidates for admission must have a thorough preparation with high academic achievement showing evidence of the capacity to succeed in a rigorous medical education program. They must also demonstrate certain personal characteristics expected of a physician, including: integrity, compassion, maturity, motivation, and interpersonal skills. A Bachelor’s Degree, MCAT, letters of recommendation, and personal interview are required.

AACOMAS Traffic Guidelines

Osteopathic Medical College (COM) applicants may be asked to submit necessary matriculation documents, including a deposit, according to the following AACOMAS traffic guideline schedule:

Those accepted prior to November 15 to have until December 14.
Those accepted between November 15 and January 14 to have 30 days
Those accepted between January 15 and April 30 to have 14 days.

Commitment to Underserved Communities

NYITCOM is committed to preparing osteopathic physicians for careers in healthcare, including that in the inner city and rural communities. In 2012, A-State approached New York Institute of Technology with the idea of establishing an NYITCOM program at the A-State campus aimed at producing physicians in generalist specialties (family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery, emergency medicine, and obstetrics/gynecology), who would practice in the medically underserved areas of Arkansas and the Mississippi Delta region.

In August 2016, NYITCOM-Arkansas welcomed its inaugural class of 115 medical students. NYITCOM-Arkansas has enjoyed a 100 percent post-graduate placement rate, with 70 percent of its graduates pursuing primary care specialties (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, General Surgery, and Psychiatry).
