Childhood Influences and College Aspirations
Growing up in the diverse and academically ambitious environment of California's Bay Area, the author developed a strong desire for personal growth and independence. Witnessing the high concentration of technology and startups, coupled with the expectations placed on children of immigrant parents to excel academically, shaped their aspirations for a college experience that would foster authentic growth and freedom. While their parents envisioned a college experience close to home, the author yearned for a path that would allow them to carve their own educational journey.
The Choice: Northeastern University
After a nerve-wracking college application season during the height of Covid-19, the author found themselves choosing between Boston University and Northeastern University. Attracted by the prospect of studying independently away from home, they ultimately chose Northeastern University and as a Class of 2025 alumni today, they are beyond grateful for this choice, their growth as a Husky, and the deep career exposure from the school’s robust co-op program. This decision proved to be transformative, offering a blend of academic rigor and real-world experience through the university's renowned co-op program.

Spring 2022: Seeking Business and Leadership Exposure
Situated in Boston, the author sought additional business and leadership exposure. Serving as a member on a client-facing consulting project and continuing their work as a project assistant alongside their professor. They gained hands-on experience regarding Boston non-profits, strategy and execution, and interaction with various departments at Northeastern.
Fall 2022: Leadership, Learning, and a Co-op Offer
With over a year of Northeastern experience, the author embraced the diverse student body and sought further leadership opportunities. The author served as VP of Recruitment and Fundraising this term and led their first ever committee and “work stream” of meetings and deliverables under their focus, continued and successfully executed a year-long event project for one of their favorite Vietnamese-American authors, Phuc Tran, learned an incredible amount from Professor Garrett as a project assistant, and led a client-facing consulting team as a project manager and presented to a startup on our weekly deliverables. Fostering many more great friendships while learning the definition of “balance” along the way gradually. In October, they received their first co-op offer, marking a significant step towards their career aspirations. After advisor approval, they excitedly signed the offer and called their dad that they were moving to NYC next semester for their first finance co-op!
Spring 2023: A Transformative Co-op in New York City
Venturing into the unknown, the author embraced their first co-op in New York City, working full-time for 6 months at a financial services firm (Goldman Sachs NYC). This experience provided invaluable exposure to a global industry and refined essential soft skills, such as fostering relationships with mentors, carving a personal brand, and maintaining curiosity. The author also attended extremely unique networking opportunities and hospitality events as a part of their specific co-op team experience, fostered incredibly relationships with mentors that still actively inspire them today, learned the initial ropes of “Corporate America” but there is always more learning here as well, balanced business chapter commitments and battled ongoing health circumstances all at the same time, and continued their freelance photography and expanded their reach into a new city for new clients!!
Fall 2023: Navigating Challenges and Reflecting on the Future
This semester was a blur, and the author went through each week sometimes spending more time on their business chapter than their own school work for particular reasons. They balanced heavy extracurriculars on top of a full-time course load, reconnected with friends they haven’t seen in a while since before their NYC co-op experience, and reflected on their future career path and their plans for the rest of their Northeastern journey :).
Spring 2024: Another Co-op in NYC
The author moved to NYC again for a different client facing role at a financial services firm (Scotiabank NYC), explored new areas of the city and committed more deeply into their freelance photography (ongoing 6+ years today) as a creative outlet!, visited friends occasionally and reflected on the type of career they wanted post-grad only to feel lost along the way, joined an on-campus consulting club and a case competition to feed their newfound interest in the consulting industry, and received a summer analyst offer but ended up taking on a summer consulting internship in NYC for new exposure!

Strengths of Northeastern University
From the author's perspective, Northeastern University possesses several key strengths that contribute to a valuable student experience:
Exposure to Various Industries Through Co-op
Northeastern's co-op program stands out as a significant strength, offering students unparalleled opportunities to explore different industries and gain practical work experience. Whether a student is in business, nursing, computer science, or engineering, Northeastern partners with a wide range of companies, from startups to Fortune 500 corporations, providing diverse co-op placements. This allows students to diversify their interests and experiment to see which role / company / industry best suited them or leverage the co-ops to very deeply learn about a particular focus. The opportunity to work at both small and large companies, apply your in-classroom knowledge to a real world setting, and network on the job all towards tangible resume experience is extremely valuable. The co-op program enables students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world settings, network with professionals, and build tangible resume experience.
Emphasis on Non-Traditional Learning
Northeastern's emphasis on non-traditional learning methods, such as study abroad programs and dialogues, provides students with immersive cultural experiences and opportunities for self-discovery. From the semester in programs across London to Silicon Valley to the dialogues in Japan, Paris, or Italy to Northeastern’s sister partnerships, a good majority of my peers studied abroad. It was a “norm” at Northeastern, and I believe it helps balance out the often “competitive” recruiting culture for co-ops within the school environment. These programs foster a global perspective and encourage personal growth beyond the confines of the classroom.

Diverse and Fulfilling Student Community Niches
With a large undergraduate population, Northeastern offers a wide array of student organizations and activities, catering to diverse interests and passions. From intramural sports to cultural clubs to greek life to club sports to business and career organizations to church youth groups to run clubs to the arts, I believe every student can eventually find their niche and community within Northeastern. Within this large campus, it’s nice to find a “home”.
Weaknesses of Northeastern University
While the author holds Northeastern in high regard, they also identify areas where the institution could improve:
Prioritization of Short-Term Profit at the Expense of School’s Reputation
Northeastern is a heavily “overenrolled” Boston campus. Similarly face high enrollment and space issues, Northeastern continually increases their class size so much to the point where they even converted dorms meant for singles or doubles into triples in International Village (IV). This move earned the living assignments a nickn.
Lack of Consistent Support to Strengthen Northeastern’s Reputation and Deep Relationships to Employers
This weakness is not extensively elaborated upon in the provided text, but it suggests a need for Northeastern to further invest in its relationships with employers and enhance its overall reputation.
