Without recognition in the DSM, NVLD is not covered by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act-meaning students can’t get accommodations if they don’t have another diagnosable disability.

Core Challenges in NVLD

Amy Margolis, a professor of pediatric neuropsychiatry at Columbia University, highlights that NVLD involves difficulty with visual and spatial reasoning, and problem-solving, leading to functional impairments in everyday life. She also adds that a common misconception is that people with NVLD have problems with language and speech, or that it is an autism spectrum disorder. Researchers have studied how the disorders are similar and how they’re different. You could have both, Margolis said, but they’re distinct.

Dr. Margolis breaks down visual-spatial processing into eight specific skills that children with NVLD can have difficulty with. Some kids are affected in just a few of them. Others struggle with all of them. As a result, children with NVLD can be very different from each other. With each child, the first step to getting support for them is to figure out exactly what kinds of problems they are facing. These include:

  1. Visual-Spatial Construction: Difficulty with tasks involving physical construction, such as puzzles, models, building blocks, or even everyday tasks like dressing or making a bed. It could also mean difficulties forming mental images when hearing or reading a book.

  3. Visual-Spatial Estimation: Problems with estimating size, length, quantity, distance, or speed. This can also affect the efficient use of space on paper.

A classic example of NVLD's impact is difficulty with math, said Margolis, either in understanding numerosity and the concepts behind math, or the mechanics of learning the procedures for things to line up on the page-for instance, if you’re writing an addition problem, and the columns don’t align.

Children with NVLD may face significant hurdles in mathematics due to the visual-spatial demands of the subject. Some specific challenges include:

  • Understanding Numerosity: Grasping the fundamental concept of numbers and their relationships can be difficult.
  • Mathematical Procedures: Difficulty in aligning numbers correctly in arithmetic problems, leading to errors in calculations.
  • Visual-Spatial Problem-Solving: As students with NVLD get older, they might struggle with certain kinds of math that require visual or spatial problem-solving, like geometry, or in science where they may have to read and draw graphs.

Monica McHale-Small, the director of education for the Learning Disabilities of America Association, who was an educator for nearly 30 years, said that these students may also struggle with higher-order comprehension. Rewording directions or explaining concepts in a different way, are ways to help.

Strategies for Supporting Math Learning in NVLD

Given the specific challenges posed by NVLD, targeted interventions and teaching strategies are crucial for fostering success in mathematics. Here are some effective approaches:

  1. Verbalization: Encourage students to verbalize their thought processes while solving math problems. This helps connect their strong verbal skills to the visual-spatial aspects of math. As suggested by The NVLD Project, students should use their verbal skills to narrate every math step.
  2. Step-by-Step Instructions: Provide clear, sequential instructions for mathematical procedures. Breaking down complex tasks into smaller, manageable steps can reduce cognitive overload.
  3. Visual Aids: Utilize visual aids such as diagrams, manipulatives, and color-coding to enhance understanding of mathematical concepts. Giving a student the diagram and helping them label it, rather than drawing it, is one way teachers can create an inclusive space.
  4. Real-World Connections: Connect mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios to make learning more meaningful and relevant.
  5. Accommodations: Provide accommodations such as extra time on tests, the use of calculators, and access to a "cheat sheet" of equations.
  6. Multi-Sensory Approaches: Incorporate multi-sensory teaching methods that engage different senses, such as using tactile materials or auditory cues.

Because NVLD isn’t in the diagnostic nomenclature, it is hard for students to get diagnosed, Margolis said. Clinicians are forced to classify people based on “downstream problems”-like if they also meet criteria for ADHD, anxiety, or specific learning disorders in math. This means students often won’t have accommodations specific to NVLD under the IDEA Act.

Early identification of NVLD is essential to provide timely support and interventions. Amie Wolf, PhD, a neuropsychologist who studies NVLD, explains that the earliest signs that a child has NVLD are often overlooked, since they have typical, or even exceptional verbal ability, it’s easy to miss the early trouble preschoolers might be having with visual-spatial skills - clumsiness or trouble building with blocks or using crayons or scissors.

The diagnostic process typically involves a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation, which assesses a range of cognitive and academic skills. While NVLD is not yet formally recognized in the DSM-5, efforts are underway to reframe it as developmental visual-spatial disorder (DVSD) to facilitate diagnosis and access to appropriate services.

Social and Emotional Considerations

Beyond academic challenges, NVLD can also impact social and emotional well-being. Children with NVLD may struggle with social cues, personal space, and navigating social situations, potentially leading to social isolation and feelings of frustration.

Social skills are also essential for success in and after school, McHale-Small added.

Creating a supportive and understanding environment is crucial for individuals with NVLD. Encouraging self-advocacy, fostering social skills, and addressing any emotional difficulties can promote overall well-being and resilience.

Parents and educators play a vital role in advocating for students with NVLD within the educational system. This includes:

Abby Bell also shared her NVLD story as a 21-year-old student in November of 2017. She said that living with an NVLD can cause one to feel misunderstood in their everyday lives. For example, Bell explains that she prefers in-person verbal communication over texting since it can be difficult to interpret a message and understand the other person’s perspective.
