The NFL Alumni Academy: Developing Football Talent and Beyond
The NFL Alumni Academy represents a multifaceted initiative designed to cultivate football talent and provide comprehensive support to both aspiring players and seasoned NFL veterans. Through innovative training programs, educational opportunities, and health and wellness resources, the Academy aims to make a significant impact on the sport and the lives of those connected to it.
A Global Initiative: The NFL Academy
Launched in May 2019, the NFL Academy is a major global initiative by the NFL. It aims to provide full-time high-school education alongside intensive training in American football under the guidance of a world class coaching staff. Initially housed at Barnet and Southgate College in North London, the program moved to Loughborough in the summer of 2022 to further develop its academic and athletic offerings through Loughborough College and the nearby Loughborough University. The program has been consistently supported by UK ambassadors Efe Obada, Osi Umenyiora, Jason Bell and Christian Scotland-Williamson.
Overcoming Challenges and Expanding Competition
The NFL Academy’s first competitive game was delayed until Spring 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, when it took place in Düsseldorf, Germany against the Düsseldorf Panther. The games against American opposition expanded in the 2023-24 season with three games, including a win in the rematch. The NFL Academy has provided multiple opportunities to help students to be seen and recruited by American colleges.
Preparing Players: The NFL Alumni Academy Player Development Program
A key component of programming for the NFL Alumni Academy is an unprecedented in-season training program developing “NFL Ready” players. The Academy will train the top free agent football players in preparation to sign an in-season contract with NFL teams looking to replace 500+ active roster players lost during each season due to injury. The Academy combines world class sports science, advances in athlete performance, data analytics and digital analysis together with old school technique and improving Football IQ.
The NFL Alumni Association hosts the NFL Alumni Academy player development program each football season at the Hall of Fame Village powered by Johnson Controls in Canton, Ohio. As the NFL season begins, so too, will the NFL Alumni Association’s Academy start its first development/training season.

Fostering Diversity: The Football Diversity Development Program
Recognizing the significant imbalance in the number of minorities in key areas of competencies compared to the percentage of minority players in the National Football League, the program is designed to accelerate the professional positions geared toward employment in the National Football League and beyond. As part of its efforts, the Academy will employ NFL Alumni to not only develop “NFL Ready” players but also develop future NFL coaches, personnel scouts and front office executives through the Football Diversity Development program. This purpose of the program is to intentionally prepare and promote minority former players for professional opportunities in elite levels of sports, including the NFL.
Experienced veteran NFL coaches, players and personnel experts will teach, coach and mentor the former NFL players seeking to move into the professional ranks of the league. The NFL Alumni Academy will provide exposure for all 32 NFL teams to evaluate the talented skill sets, as well as establish a direct line of communication and relationships with the program participants in the hopes of generating professional opportunities for those involved.
Women in Football: Collaboration with the Women's Football Alliance
The WFA will elect 7 players and/or coaches to train under NFL Alumni Academy coaches for a 1-week internship with room and board provided. The Women’s Football Alliance is the largest women’s football league in the world. With 64 teams and 2,300 players, the WFA has created opportunities for women to compete and learn the game at the highest level. Its recent television network deal with ESPN and the Women’s Sports Network has expand its audience reach across the country. Over 25 WFA alumni have accepted NFL coaching and scouting positions, including WFA Advisory Board members and current NFL full time coaches, Jennifer King, (Washington Football Team), Callie Brownson (Cleveland Browns) and Lori Locust (Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
