Donavon Greene: A Chapter in the Transfer Portal Saga

The transfer portal has become an integral part of college football, reshaping team rosters and providing opportunities for players seeking a fresh start. Wide receiver Donavon Greene's journey through the portal exemplifies this trend.

A Promising Start at Wake Forest

Donavon Greene, a highly-regarded four-star prospect from Mount Airy, North Carolina, initially committed to Wake Forest in 2019. He was one of the highest-ranked players to ever sign with Wake at that time. After redshirting his first season, Greene started all eight games in 2020, catching 29 passes for 582 yards (20.1 YPR) and two touchdowns.

Injury Setbacks and a Search for a New Beginning

Greene's career at Wake Forest was unfortunately marred by injuries, causing him to miss the entire 2021 and 2023 seasons. In 2022, Greene had 37 receptions, 642 yards (17.4 YPR) and six touchdowns. In 2024, Greene caught 23 passes for 380 yards (16.5 YPR) and three touchdowns.

Following the 2024 season, a period of change swept through Wake Forest, including the departure of head coach Dave Clawson. Greene felt this was a sign to explore new opportunities for his final year of eligibility. He decided to enter the transfer portal, seeking a program that offered a strong sense of family and brotherhood.

Choosing Virginia Tech

Greene found the welcoming atmosphere he was seeking at Virginia Tech. "Once I went on visits and got to talk and be around the coaches, you know, this place obviously just welcomed me in, and it made me feel like I was already home without even being here," Greene said. He committed to Virginia Tech in January.

The Hokies were in need of experienced receivers after losing several key players from the previous season. After last season saw the Hokies lose star wideouts Jaylin Lane, Ali Jennings, Da'Quan Felton, and Stephen Gosnell, there was a forced restructuring that was required in order to rebuild what looked like one of the strongest wideout corps in the ACC. Greene, with his size, speed, and proven track record, seemed like an ideal addition to the team. The Hokies also signed the state of Virginia’s top player, Cameron Seldon, in the transfer portal. Seldon is expected to play wide receiver but can also line up in the backfield. Greene adds some much-needed experience to the room and could have a big year if he can remain healthy.

Expectations and Potential Impact

Upon arriving at Virginia Tech, Greene expressed his goals for the season, focusing on maintaining his health and becoming a vocal leader within the team. "Obviously just staying healthy for a full 12 months. I mean, that's one big goal for me and a big goal for him [wide receiver coach Fontel Mines] as I was coming in, and to just be a leader, be a more of a vocal guy, in that room."

He joined a receiving corps that included fellow transfers Isaiah Spencer and Cameron Seldon. If Greene could stay healthy, his consistent route-running and strong hands were expected to make him a key component of the Hokies' offense.

Early Season Performance

Greene's early performances for Virginia Tech in 2025 showed promise. He notched three receptions (on five targets) for 94 yards during Sunday's 24-11 defeat against South Carolina. Greene caught passes of 32, 37 and 25 yards during Sunday's season-opening loss, pacing Virginia Tech in receiving yards while finishing second in targets and receptions. The Wake Forest transfer looked to be locked in to a key role in the Hokies' offense and has established enough trust with Kyron Drones to be on the receiving end of deep passes. Greene recorded five receptions (on seven targets) for 77 yards and two touchdowns during Saturday's 45-26 defeat to Old Dominion. Greene set season highs in receptions and targets Saturday and caught his first two touchdowns of the campaign. His scores came from 10 and 23 yards out. Through three games, Greene caught nine of his 16 targets for 193 yards. Greene (undisclosed) is probable for Saturday's game versus Wake Forest, per the ACC availability report. Greene popped up on Thursday's injury report, but the injury does not appear to be serious and he will likely still play Saturday. He has caught 12 passes (on 24 targets) for 215 yards and two touchdowns so far this season. Greene reeled in all four targets for 52 yards during Saturday's 30-23 defeat versus Wake Forest. Greene totaled nine catches for 193 yards and two touchdowns in VT's first three games of the season before posting fewer than 15 yards in back-to-back games. He got back on track in Week 6, leading the team in receptions and receiving yards in a contest where starting quarterback Kyron Drones threw for just 111 yards. Greene was one of VT's top wideouts through early portions of the season. The senior caught 16 passes on 28 targets for 267 yards and two touchdowns over his first six appearances.

Unexpected Departure

However, Greene's time with the Hokies was cut short. In November, it was reported that he was no longer part of the program. He went without a catch for three games after, and coming out of the bye week, he's not part of the program anymore.

The Wide Receiver Room Moving Forward

Following Greene's departure, Ayden Greene, Takye Heath and Cameron Seldon were expected to lead the WR room going forward.

A Career in Review

Greene played at Mount Airy High School, where two current Hokies - RB Tyler Mason and DE Deric Dandy - also played. Mount Airy is only an hour and a half from Blacksburg. Thus far the North Carolina native has marked 102 receptions and over 1,800 yards and over 13 touchdowns averaging 56 yards per game.
