Generals Set to Compete at NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships
The No. 19 Washington and Lee (W&L) men's cross country team is gearing up for the 2025 NCAA Division III South Regional Championships, set to take place on Saturday, November 15, at Green Hill Park in Salem, Virginia.
Generals' Momentum
Washington and Lee enters the postseason on a high note, having recently secured a decisive victory at the ODAC Championships. The Generals reclaimed the conference crown with an impressive score of 27 points, showcasing their depth with five runners finishing within the top 11. This victory underscores the team's strength and sets the stage for a competitive showing at the regional championships.
ODAC Championship Performance
At the ODAC Championships, sophomore Sam Daunt emerged as the individual champion, earning ODAC Runner of the Meet honors with a record-breaking time of 25:36.9. Daunt's performance edged out teammate Robert Cooper (25:37.1) by a mere two-tenths of a second, as both runners shattered the previous course record of 25:42.6, which was set in 2015. Senior Keaton Rush also contributed to the team's success, placing fifth (25:52.9) and being named ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Generals displayed remarkable consistency, with their scoring pack averaging 25:55 and maintaining a tight 45-second spread. The 1-2 finish by Daunt and Cooper further solidified the team's front-running presence.
Regional Rivalry
The South Region Championship is anticipated to be a showdown between Washington and Lee and No. 23 Lynchburg, two nationally ranked programs. This competition renews one of the South Region's most intense rivalries. Both teams feature elite front runners: Daunt and Cooper for W&L, and Jordan and Cobb for Lynchburg.
