EA Sports College Football 25: A Deep Dive into Game Modes and Features

After an eleven-year hiatus, EA Sports has revived its college football franchise with the release of EA Sports College Football 25. The game promises to deliver an authentic and immersive college football experience, complete with iconic stadiums, traditions, and gameplay. This article delves into the various game modes and features that make College Football 25 a worthy successor to its predecessors.

Iconic Atmospheres and Explosive Gameplay

College Football 25 aims to capture the essence of college football with authentic soundscapes and iconic atmospheres. Players will be immersed in legendary stadiums, from The Big House to The Swamp, complete with all their iconic rituals and traditions. The game also features CampusIQ, which offers an authentic, fast-paced college football experience, featuring an all-new composure system, player Wear & Tear, homefield advantages and dozens of diverse playstyles across all 134 FBS teams.

Dynasty Mode: Build Your Legacy

The classic Dynasty Mode makes a triumphant return, allowing players to create a coach, pick one of the 134 FBS programs, establish a coaching staff, and build from there. Recruiting will encompass both high school prospects and the transfer portal for the first time. Players can also create a new school through Team Builder. Online Dynasty Mode will allow up to 32 players.

Recruiting and Roster Management

Recruiting is a crucial aspect of Dynasty Mode. During the preseason, players comb through the prospects list and flesh out their big board, tending to their targets each week. Players control everything from who they offer scholarships to when players visit their campus and how they interact with them. (You can DM prospects on social media, though you don’t actually see the conversations.)

After the season ends and the offseason kicks off, the transfer portal opens. Players must navigate deal breakers, as many of the top players have specific requirements that a school must possess for them to consider it. For example, an incoming freshman might desire a lot of coach stability. If your program has a C+ coach stability ranking and the player requires a B, you are locked out of recruiting that player.

For those who prefer to focus on gameplay, automated recruiting can be enabled in settings, allowing the computer to moderate it. In addition to recruiting, players can customize their team’s schedule or realign the conferences, hire and fire assistant coaches, manage their players’ goals and skill progressions, and encourage them to enter the portal.

Coaching Carousel

The coaching carousel adds another layer of depth to Dynasty Mode. At the end of each year, players can search for better jobs or be fired if they don’t meet the standards outlined in their contract.

Road To Glory: Forge Your Path to Stardom

Road To Glory also makes a comeback, allowing players to create an individual player and go through their college career. Players will have to manage their weekly schedule, GPA, and image, as well as earn Coach Trust to get more playing time.

Balancing Academics and Athletics

In Road to Glory, players must balance their time between academics, leadership, health, training, and brand (NIL). Players receive texts each week that affect those categories, such as invitations to parties, messages about upcoming exams, or offers for additional practice time.

Earning Coach Trust

Earning Coach Trust is essential for getting more playing time and freedom on the field. As players establish a rhythm and the season progresses, the game loosens its grip, allowing them more control over the playbook. The transfer portal is available after every season, providing players with the opportunity to seek out programs that better suit their goals.

Road To The College Football Playoff: Compete Online

One new mode is called Road To The College Football Playoff, an online format that will be playable across consoles. EA describes this feature as such: “Will you represent your university, or take a power school to climb the polls? Earn rank by upsetting the toughest opponents and securing the votes you need to progress and level up divisions. Play your way into the playoffs and battle for the National Championship.”

Ultimate Team: Build Your Dream Team

The game will also add a full version of Ultimate Team, which is a common feature in other sports video games and will also be playable across consoles. In this mode, players can build teams of stars and legends. In NCAA Football 14, only former college players were available in Ultimate Team. Building a team involves winning or purchasing in-game credits.

Gameplay Enhancements: CampusIQ and Wear & Tear

College Football 25 introduces new in-game features known as “CampusIQ,” including the “Wear & Tear System,” where player ratings can change as the hits add up. Game players will need to manage their rosters’ health, limit fatigue and make substitution decisions. There will also be Pre-Snap Recognition, which EA Sports says will involve reading the game and making the right decisions.

Cross-Play Functionality

College Football 25 supports cross-play, allowing players on different platforms to compete against each other.

Enabling and Disabling Cross-Play

Cross-play will be enabled by default when you start the game for the first time on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. On Xbox Series X|S, cross-play settings are controlled through the system settings.

The method for disabling cross-play differs by platform. On Xbox Series X|S, this must be done through the console system settings.

How Cross-Play Works

Players who opt in to cross-play will automatically be added to the cross-play matchmaking pool. Cross-play invites will be available in select multiplayer modes that support inviting friends from your own platform.

To play with your friends, open the EA connect menu in College Football 25, then navigate to the Player Search tab. Search for a player using their EA Identification number or by using their platform identifier.

For players who opt in to cross-play, any leaderboard in any mode that supports cross-play will be a global leaderboard that includes players from all supported platforms.

Cross-play increases player pools significantly, so that more players are looking for matches at each skill level.

Commentary and Presentation

ESPN will serve as the in-game broadcaster. Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will call marquee games, while other games will be called by Rece Davis, Jesse Palmer and David Pollack.

The Road to Release: Overcoming Challenges

Following the release of the series' previous entry in 2013, Electronic Arts (EA) settled a lawsuit brought by former college football players who argued their name, image and, likeness (NIL) were used without permission or compensation. Initially, player names and likenesses were not to be included in the game. Because of this, several schools, including Notre Dame, Tulane and Northwestern refused to join the game until NIL rules were finalized. EA Sports responded by stating "player name, image and likeness is not currently planned for the game. However, we are watching the developments in this area closely and are prepared to take steps to include players should that opportunity arise."

At the time, the NCAA had delayed and not voted on new NIL rules, but over two dozen states had either passed or proposed laws so that institutions couldn't enforce the NCAA's NIL rules. The 2021 United States Supreme Court case NCAA. v. Alston further impacted the landscape of NIL rights.

On November 22, 2022, in an interview with ESPN.com's Michael Rothstein, EA Sports vice president and general manager Daryl Holt stated that Electronic Arts would release the game sometime in summer 2024. On February 22, 2024, EA Sports announced that all 134 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs would be featured in EA Sports College Football 25 but the 128 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) programs would not be included at launch.
