A Legacy of Leadership: Exploring the NCAA Football Coach of the Year Awards
College football coaching is more than just X's and O's; it's about leadership, mentorship, and making a lasting impact on athletes and the community. Several prestigious awards recognize coaches who exemplify these qualities. Among them are the Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award and the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award. These awards celebrate not only on-field success but also the character and values that define exceptional coaching.
The Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award
The Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award annually recognizes the country’s top college football coach for their positive contributions both on and off the field, as well as efforts to make the sport better for athletes and fans alike by demonstrating grit, integrity, and a winning approach to coaching and life. The award is presented in Houston.
A Tribute to a Coaching Legend
The award is named after Paul “Bear” Bryant, a football coaching legend. Coach Bryant was a leader, both on and off the field. He possessed the ability to inspire, the patience to teach, and the gift of leadership. The Paul “Bear” Bryant Coach of the Year Award salutes those coaches who have reached that same high standard of excellence.
After Paul “Bear” Bryant died from a heart attack in 1983, the Bryant family teamed up with the American Heart Association in 1986, building on the Association’s Coach of the Year Award to create the Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards program. This collaboration amplifies the drive for education surrounding heart disease. The legacy of Coach Bryant and the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association are deeply connected.
Selection and Recognition
The Coach of the Year award is voted on by the National Sports Media Association, current NCAA College football coaches, former Coach of the Year Award winners, the Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards’ Executive Leadership Team, and the Bryant family.
