EA Sports College Football 25: Release Date, Features, and the Road to Return
Anticipation reached fever pitch as fans awaited the return of a beloved franchise: EA Sports College Football. After an 11-year hiatus, EA Sports College Football 25 launched on July 19, 2025, marking a triumphant return to the market. The game is available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The Long Road Back: NIL and Legal Hurdles
The journey back to the gridiron wasn't easy. Following the release of the series' previous entry in 2013, Electronic Arts (EA) faced a lawsuit brought by former college football players. These players argued that their name, image, and likeness (NIL) were used without permission or compensation. This legal battle led to EA settling the lawsuit and halting the production of college football games.
Initially, player names and likenesses were not planned for inclusion in the game. This led to several schools, including Notre Dame, Tulane, and Northwestern, refusing to join the game until NIL rules were finalized. EA Sports responded by stating that "player name, image and likeness is not currently planned for the game. However, we are watching the developments in this area closely and are prepared to take steps to include players should that opportunity arise."
At the time, the NCAA had delayed voting on new NIL rules, but over two dozen states had either passed or proposed laws preventing institutions from enforcing the NCAA's NIL rules. The 2021 United States Supreme Court case NCAA v. Alston further challenged the NCAA's restrictions on athlete compensation.
The Green Light: Overcoming Obstacles
The landscape began to shift, paving the way for the return of the franchise. On November 22, 2022, EA Sports vice president and general manager Daryl Holt stated that Electronic Arts would release the game sometime in summer 2024. "That's the best date for us to bring the game that we think is going to meet or exceed our player expectations…and cover the breadth and scale of what we want in the game."

A significant step forward came with the implementation of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) rights for college athletes. This allowed EA Sports to include real players in the game, a feature that had been missing for over a decade. EA Sports revealed that more than 11,000 collegiate athletes received a $600 payment and a deluxe version of the game for allowing their NIL to be used in the final product.

The new “wear-and-tear” system affects a player’s rating based on how many consecutive downs where they receive physical contact are played. In College Football 25, players have more control at pre-snap to disguise their look on defense and can show up to five or six different alignments.

Temple University's Experience
On Friday, July 19, Temple Student Services hosted a launch party for EA Sports College Football 25 at the Howard Gittis Student Center and invited Temple football’s players and students to participate.
Thilo Kunkel, a professor at Temple University’s School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management, explained how previous versions of EA’s NCAA video games played a crucial role in influencing the NIL landscape today. According to Kunkel, this can be traced back to 2009 when former UCLA basketball player Ed O’Bannon first filed a lawsuit against EA Sports and the NCAA after seeing his likeness used in EA Sports’ NCAA Basketball 09 without his permission.
D.J. Woodbury, a linebacker for the Owls, expressed his excitement: "Seeing our Temple team and myself in the game for the first time gave me the ultimate shock." Woodbury added that he is impressed with the ball carrier control and realism of EA’s new game. “Every player’s movement is smooth and fluid, and how a player jumps up from the ground in excitement after making a big play,” he said. “I also like the amount of plays you can run from the playbook; you can tell EA put a lot of time into making the gameplay enjoyable and more realistic than prior years,” he added.

NIL Impact and Athlete Exposure
Kunkel highlighted the significance of NIL deals, stating, “In EA’s case, a sports game without the athlete’s likeness is just not that exciting because people want that connection with the individual player. So being allowed to pay college athletes for putting their likenesses in a video game will give the athletes more exposure to a worldwide audience, allowing them to further build their social media followings and NIL brands."
He also mentioned the example of United States men’s national soccer team star Matt Turner, who noted that he became a fan of Arsenal F.C. because it was the first team that appears when players select teams, given that the team’s name starts with A.
Reception
EA Sports College Football 25 received generally favorable reviews upon release. On Metacritic, the PlayStation 5 version of the game holds a score of 79/100 based on 28 critic reviews, while the Xbox Series X version holds a score of 80/100 based on 16 critic reviews.
