Understanding National Business Education Standards

The National Business Education Association (NBEA) developed the National Standards for Business Education. The standards, first published in 1995 at the request of business educators throughout the country, was then, and is today, at the leading edge of business and career education. Preparing students for the workplace demands a dynamic curriculum-perhaps more dynamic than any other academic discipline. The workplace undergoes constant change. Tomorrow’s challenges cannot be met using yesterday’s skills. Numerous business educators and business professionals volunteered their time and expertise to review and revise these standards for what students should know and be able to do in business.

The Need for Dynamic Business Education Standards

Business education topics are changing faster than ever. Is your curriculum keeping up? Find out with a copy of the new 2023 Standard for Business Education. The digital edition will be available to NBEA members for no additional cost in NBEA's Business Education online library. Hard-copies are also available in the NBEA online store.

The NBEA standards address this need for a dynamic curriculum. These standards are designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in a constantly evolving business environment.

Accessing the Standards

There are several ways to enjoy the latest edition of the NBEA Standards for Business Education:

  • MEMBERS - Access the single user digital copy of the standard now included in your dues. Or, order a hard-copy (Members save $30.00 on hard-copy purchases)
  • NON-MEMBERS or GUESTS - Purchase a single digital copy or hardcopy.
  • New! License the standard for inclusion in your state or district's own documents. Stakeholders such as school districts or state departments of education can license the NBEA Business Education Standard for verbatim inclusion in their own unique standard or publication. Licensing allows unlimited reprints and public distribution for an unspecified period. Licensing does not allow reproduction of the standard alone, but must be integrated into other unique documents such as state/district specific standards. Licensing fees collected go to help support the ongoing development and maintenance of the standards. The licensing fee is $3,750.00 and requires a signed agreement. Contact us for more information about standard licensing.
  • New! Need access to a comprehensive online Excel spreadsheet with the standards listed. This is perfect for instructional designers or teachers that want easy copy and paste ability. Want to save simply by becoming a member? NBEA.org/join

Core Tenets of Business Education Standards

The NBEA emphasizes several core tenets within its business education standards. These tenets aim to provide students with a holistic understanding of the business world.

Understanding Opportunity Costs and Productivity

First, the NBEA requires that students understand opportunity costs. The second factor students need to understand is productivity. The more someone gets done, the more productive they are! Depending on who you ask, you may also find economists who argue that quality plays a role in productivity alone with quantity.

Economic Principles

Students go beyond naming these institutions though. The more plentiful something is, the lower its price will be.

The Importance of Ethics, Legality, and Responsibility in IT

IT can often feel like it exists in a separate world from reality. That specialized knowledge brings its own expectations of ethics, legality, and responsibility. It’s borderline impossible to find any company today that doesn’t have IT infrastructure to some degree. This tenet is the culmination of the ones that came before it.

Business Structures

On a general level, this refers to private and public companies. You can also take a look at the titles different companies use - CEO, partner, principal, president, chairperson, director, etc.

Shifting Management Styles

In years past, managers held an immense amount of power over their subordinates.

Adapting to Change

You can take this in any number of directions. As a business education teacher, teaching topics you are unfamiliar with can be frustrating. You can meet NBEA standards with any lesson plans or resources that you choose.

Cross-Referencing with Personal Finance Education Standards

A study was conducted to determine the extent to which National Standards in Personal Finance for Business Education correlate with National Standards in Personal Finance Education. A content analysis revealed that the National Standards in Personal Finance for Business Education, established by the National Business Education Association (NBEA), are well aligned with the National Standards in Personal Finance Education created by the Jump$tart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy. Jump$tart's money management standard correlated with seven of the eight NBEA standards, the highest of any of the Jump$tart standards. Two Jump$tart standards, income and spending and credit, did not align well with any of the NBEA personal finance standards.

Additional Considerations

  • Accounting as a Language: Accounting is, in many ways, its own language.
  • Cybersecurity: Hacking - and the crimes that result from it - is a very real, very potent threat to students’ future employers.
  • Career Exploration: It’s surprisingly simple as a concept, though. In effect, this is career exploration. The Internet has become the most valuable (and accessible) resource in that regard. Best of all, students can learn about careers around the planet this way. Students in high school are working part-time jobs less and less these days.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Tone plays a huge role in communicating in every culture.
  • Business Law: Incidentally, this ties back into concepts like business law surprisingly well. This is crucial for entrepreneurs to understand for whenever they start and grow a company.
  • Electronic Tools: Electronic tools have expanded at a rapid rate over the past few years. Some of these tools perform essential tasks. You can teach this tenet a thousand different ways.
  • Data Management: It could be a database of clients. It could be network hard drives.
